BALOO Training - Spring 2026

Event Details

Cub Scout Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) Trainin

About the Training

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is the essential outdoor training for all Cub Scout leaders and parent volunteers who want to plan and lead pack or den camping experiences. This course introduces participants to the basics of outdoor program planning, safety, and Cub Scout-level camping skills. The training emphasizes fun, simplicity, and confidence-building — helping new leaders bring the adventure of the outdoors to their pack. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be certified to organize and lead pack or den overnighters, including Webelos and Arrow of Light camping activities.

Learning Objectives

By completing this hands-on course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the focus of the Cub Scout camping program
  • Plan and carry out a safe, fun, and successful pack overnight experience
  • Demonstrate confidence in key outdoor skills
  • Identify available Scouting America and local resources
  • Understand requirements for running a Cub Scout-level overnight event

Prerequisites

To be considered “BALOO Trained,” participants must complete both components of the course:

  • Online component: Available through My.Scouting.org under “Training.”
  • Practical, hands-on component: This in-person weekend at Camp Thunderbird meets this part.

Participants must also:

  • Be registered with a Scouting America unit
  • Have current Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) completed prior to the course

If the online portion is not completed before the weekend, “Trained” status will be withheld until both parts are finished.

Who Should Attend

BALOO is designed for:

  • New Cub Scout leaders or parent volunteers who have little to no camping experience
  • Pack parents and leaders who want to expand into outdoor programming

While current pack leaders are welcome, this course especially supports new volunteers ready to help plan and lead pack overnighters.

What to Expect

This is a practical, outdoor-based training that includes cooking, campsite setup, and Cub Scout-level camping activities. Participants will spend time both learning and practicing the skills needed to confidently lead their own pack overnight.

The environment is supportive, hands-on, and focused on learning by doing. Bring your enthusiasm, a sense of adventure, and a readiness to have fun in the outdoors!

What to Bring

Please review and pack based on our BALOO Gear List.

  • Comfortable outdoor clothing and shoes
  • Field uniform
  • Tent and sleeping gear
  • Personal items and toiletries
  • Notebook and pen
  • Snacks or comfort items (we will try to accommodate known allergies and dietary restrictions)
