Thoughts for Choosing Classes:
All of these classes are taught by professors from WSU and all of the classes are in four hour blocks. Every effort is made to present material and instruct in a hands-on way and at the level of the scouts present. That being said, please read through the merit badge requirements for the badges your child is interested in with your child in mind. Perhaps following your scout for the day and helping to provide some support where needed would help them to be successful or perhaps your child would be most successful in taking just one class instead of two. A reminder that it is also acceptable for a scout to NOT complete the badge during the class session. Instructors are registered as Merit Badge Counselors and are happy to work with your scout after the event to sign off on requirements that were missed if your scout contacts them afterwards. This typically happens when scouts are asked to do requirements like "research 3 careers in this field and the education required" but scouts are enthusiastically practicing the hands on skills they were previously working on instead - can't really be upset about the enthusiasm or the maximising of time in the lab! If the badges your child requests have such research components, you are also welcome to prepare work for those questions and bring it with you to class.
ADULTS:
Adults are needed to support our classrooms through basic classroom management and help to support scouts by stepping in and guiding through challenging moments as they arise so that the instructor can keep the rest of the class on topic. These are the same ways we support our scouts at troop meetings! Event leadership will be available to step in should higher support be needed. </p>
You do not need to be a registered leader to support the event. All of our instructors are registered and Youth Protection trained as Merit Badge Counselors. We do request that all adults take Safeguarding Youth training (formerly YPT) via my.scouting.org if not registered.
Adults who have indicated they are staying will also select which classrooms they are in or be assigned as needed (if indicating general availability to support) Adults who plan on following their scouts to classes will be requested that they keep an eye on all scouts in the classrooms they are in as needed. Contact info for event leadership will be provided to all classroom adults in case extra support of a scout is needed.
