Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills Training

INTRODUCTION TO OUTDOOR LEADER SKILLS TRAINING (IOLS)

FOR SCOUTMASTERS, ASST. SCOUTMASTERS, VENTURING CREW LEADERS & OTHER ADULT LEADERS

6 pm Friday, April 10th to 5 pm Saturday, April 11th.

At Sacajawea Historical State Park

2503 Sacajawea Park Rd, Pasco, WA 99301

No fee for this training (you will receive a food assignment)

A fun-filled program of hands-on skills training in the outdoors, designed to help you master basic camp skills required for Tenderfoot to First Class Rank Advancement. First aid skills are not part of the course. You will learn about:

o Campsite selection

o Woods tools

o Cooking and sanitation

o Ropes, knots, & lashings

o Map & Compass

o Flag Etiquette

o Campfire planning

o Fire site preparation and building

o Backpacking & Hiking techniques

o Plant & Animal ID

o Leave No Trace Camping

o Interfaith Worship

This training is needed to wear the “Trained” patch.

What to Bring to IOLS Training:

¨ Completed BSA Health Form, Parts A & B (https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_AB.pdf)

¨ Current Youth Protection Training certificate of completion

¨ Field Uniform (aka Class A) for Friday arrival and closing Ceremony, Activity Uniform (aka Class B) for rest of the time

Overnight gear, outdoor essentials, and appropriate clothing are the heart of camping equipment. Carry a light load of only what you need to keep yourself safe and make a good camp; leave all unnecessary items at home. Preferably bring lightweight backpacking tents.
