Hunter Safety Course
At T. Brady Saunders
This is the basic Hunter Education Class required by the State of Virginia for all new hunters. The instructors will be certified Department of Wildlife Resource instructors. This class is open to all Scouts, parents, and family members. The course material is geared toward a sixth-grade level of reading, vocabulary, and comprehension.
The class consists of a home study portion and a classroom portion. Prior to class on May 22nd, all participants MUST obtain a student manual entitled “Today’s Hunter”. Copies can be obtained: (1) online PDF or ebook at Kalkomey Bookstore, (2) purchased by phone at (800) 830-2268 (cost is approximately $10.95 plus $5.00 shipping), or (3) obtained free of charge at any Department of Wildlife Resource office, either Greentop Sporting Goods location or at the Scout Service Center. If you download the manual you do not have to print the entire book, just the worksheet pages 1 to 4 in a separate PDF on the website.
All participants MUST read the entire publication and complete the worksheets at the end of the manual (pages 105 to 108 or pages 1-4 pdf) and bring them to class. All participants must have these worksheets completed prior to arriving. They will be checked at registration and you must have them to complete the classroom training. Approximately 50 percent of the test material in the certification exam at the end of the course comes from the student manual. Obtaining this certification allows all participants to purchase a Virginia hunting license and meets a requirement contained in both Rifle Shooting (1f) and Shotgun Shooting (1f) merit badges
