Annual Orienteering Weekend at Albright Scout Reservation
Saturday, March 26, 2022

Description:  The Central Virginia Orienteering Club (CVOC) is presenting its Ninth Annual Orienteering Weekend in conjunction with Albright Scout Reservation.  CVOC members, Scouts, and the public are welcome.  No experience is necessary and instruction relative to compass and map basics can be provided.

The event is primarily directed at Scouts that need to complete a one-mile orienteering course, requiring measuring height and/or distance, for First Class rank.  The event can also be used to satisfy part of Orienteering merit badge requirement 7.  Scout registration is required.

Time:  For Scouts doing courses for the merit badge or First Class requirements:  Scout floating start
10:00 am to 1 pm;  height and distance sessions every 30 minutes beginning at 10 am; the last session at 12:30 pm.

Public floating start 11 am – 1 pm.  All participants back by 3 pm.

Cost:  Free for Scouts and Adult Leaders;  public $5/first map.  All participants will have to pay the $2.00 day use fee for ASR.   Scouts:  Pay the fee when you register.  Public: the fee will be paid IN CASH, on-site prior to getting a map.  Please bring exact change.

Format:  There will be 4 courses, all done in a linear fashion:

  1. Two Beginner courses approximately 2k
  2. Yellow approximately 3.5k
  3. Orange approximately 6k

If a Scout wants to complete the orienteering requirement for First Class Rank, allow two hours.  There is registration required for this activity, please register on Black Pug and then show up between 10 am and 1 pm.  Do the height and distance activity first.

All Scouts should have a compass, whistle, and water while on a course   An orienteering baseplate compass is strongly recommended, although we will have some to loan.

To find out about monthly local orienteering events where you can practice your skills, go to the CVOC web page (http://www.meetup.com/Central-Virginia-Orienteering-Club/)

Orienteering compass recommendations:  Suunto A-10 or Suunto A-30 compasses are available online from many vendors.  They are accurate and inexpensive.  Do Not purchase or bring a military lensatic compass for this event.
