Central Virginia Orienteering Club

What: Orienteering Day - R. Garland Dodd Park at Point of Rocks

Where: R. Garland Dodd Park at Point of Rocks                    201 Enon Church Rd, Chester, VA 23836

When: Saturday May 4, 2024                                                 Rain or Shine

 

Description: The Central Virginia Orienteering Club (CVOC) is presenting its Tenth Annual Orienteering Day. CVOC members, Scouts and the public are welcome. No experience is necessary and instruction relative to compass and map basics can be provided. The event is primarily directed at Scouts that need to complete a one mile orienteering course, requiring measuring height and/or distance, for First Class rank. The event can also be used to satisfy part of Orienteering merit badge requirement 7.

 

Registration: All participants are strongly encouraged to pre-register, walk-ups are not guaranteed a map. Scout and Adult leader registration is required via Black Pug at this link

Public registration is through the Central Virginia Orienteering Club at this link: www.meetup.com/Central-Virginia-Orienteering-Club/

Time: For Scouts doing First Class requirements: Scout floating start 10:00 am to 12pm; height and distance sessions every 30 minutes beginning at 10am; last session at 12:00pm.

Public floating start 11am – 1pm.   All participants back by 3pm.

Cost: Free for Scouts and Adult Leaders; public $5/map if pre-registered; $10 day of event. Please bring exact change.

Format: There will be 4 courses:

1) Two Beginner courses approximately 1.8K done in linear fashion

2) One Intermediate course approximately 1.8K done in linear fashion

3) Score-O – Get as many of the controls as you can in 60 minutes, you choose your route

If a Scout wants to complete the orienteering requirement for First Class Rank, allow two hours. There is registration required for this activity, please register on Black Pug and then show up between 10am and 12pm. Do the height and distance activity first.

All Scouts should have a compass, whistle and water while on a course An orienteering baseplate compass is strongly recommended, although we will have some to loan.

Orienteering Compass Recommendations: Sunto A-10, or Sunto A-30 compasses are available online from many vendors. They are accurate and inexpensive. Do Not purchase or bring a military lensatic compass for this event.
