James River District Klondike Derby
February 9th - 11th, 2024

$5 / Cub Scout attending Saturday only (no camping)

Get out those sleds and brush up on your Scout and cooking skills and join us for the James River District Klondike Derby. Patrols will travel between stations working as a “dogsled” team, using Scout power to pull their sled instead of dogs. The stations will challenge each patrol's knowledge of Scout Skills in a timed test. Each Patrol will be assigned a unique set of bearings that they will follow to navigate from station to station using map and compass. The Scouts pull their sled loaded with required sled team equipment through woods and fields, up and down hills, stopping at the various stations where they earn “gold nuggets” based on their performance. The "gold nuggets" that patrols receive will be used to purchase items at an equipment auction held Saturday evening.

This event is open to Cub Scouts, Webelos and AOL Scouts, Scouts BSA and Venture Crews. Challenges will be program and age appropriate.  Cub Scouts who would like to attend Saturday only (no camping) can do so for $5 with one free adult per Cub.

Scouts BSA and Venturing Scouts will use orienteering skills to navigate from station to station. Each team will be given its own unique set of coordinates.

Note: Webelos and AOL Scouts are invited to participate as part of a Scouts BSA patrol or as their own Webelos Patrol.

*Patrols will need to bring their own meals and will be judged and scored on meal planning, preparation and clean up.
