The American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) course prepares healthcare providers and professional rescuers to recognize and respond to cardiac arrest and other life-threatening emergencies in adults, children, and infants. This training is intended for individuals who may be responsible for providing resuscitation care in healthcare, emergency response, or patient-care settings.
Presented by Outdoor Safety LLC and hosted by the Heart of Virginia Council (HOVC), this course emphasizes high-quality CPR, rapid defibrillation, and effective team communication during resuscitation events. Participants learn to assess cardiac emergencies, provide ventilations using barrier devices, coordinate care as part of a response team, and manage conditions that may lead to cardiac arrest including respiratory arrest, opioid overdose, myocardial infarction, severe bleeding, and obstructed airway.
This course is delivered using a blended learning format that combines required online coursework with an in-person instructor-led skills session. After completing the online portion and demonstrating competency during hands-on skills practice and testing scenarios, participants receive a two-year American Red Cross Basic Life Support certification. This course is not Wilderness First Aid and does not meet the BSA High Adventure Wilderness First Aid requirement.
