2023 Klondike Derby

Event Details

WELCOME TO THE 2023 ARCTIC MIRAGE KLONDIKE DERBY

Join us at Cub Adventure Camp March 3-5, 2023 as we continue the tradition of a youth led Klondike Derby. Last year’s winner, Troop 555 is this year’s event host and they decided on Arctic Mirage as the theme for this year’s derby. A twist on the typical mirage of an oasis in the desert, teams will see the warmth of the Egyptian Desert while in the cold of the Klondike. Everything from the event theme and patch design to every single activity station is designed and planned by Scouts so you know your youth will have a blast. Let your adult leaders relax around the campfire while host Troop 555 and mentor Troop 542 take your Scouts on the desert adventure of a lifetime and crown a brand new Klondike Derby Winner.

We are excited to announce that our new venue, Cub Adventure Camp, will allow us to welcome even more units and sled teams to the event and open up additional possibilities for new activities. We hope the new location and permanent date of the first weekend in March will help with unit planning. The Scouts are hard at work testing their new activity ideas. The Sled/Gear Inspection Form with the complete list of required sled cargo will be posted in the Attachments section to the right by February 1st.

For those new to the concept, the Klondike Derby is a race to complete activities in multiple “towns” where teams test their Scout skills and leadership abilities to earn “gold.” Each team of four to eight transports the gear necessary to complete the different stations on a homemade sled they pull around the course. Earned “gold” is then spent in the Gold Nugget Auction at the end of the day. The theme and activities change from year to year to keep it fresh.

We will continue to offer the Procrastination Class for those who want to attend but don’t have time to build a sled. Your team can divide up the gear list and backpack it or use a commercially available wheeled cart/wagon to compete. This is awesome for new troops and last-minute signups but please note that you will lose a few points on the sled/gear inspection form if you don’t have an actual Klondike-style sled.

The $15 youth and $10 adult registration cost covers the event patch seen above, keepsake wristband, camping for two nights, and all activities. Units supply and cook their own food for the weekend. Potable water is available onsite.

We’re looking forward to another great Klondike Derby and hope to see you and your sled at Cub Adventure Camp March 3-5, 2023!
