Purpose of Wood Badge

The purpose of Wood Badge is to develop skilled leaders who can strengthen Scouting units in achieving the mission of Scouting America .When we accomplish the mission of Scouting, we do it in the units.  Therefore, the short form of the purpose is, to strengthen units.

One of the purposes of Wood Badge training is to get Scouters to think about the practice of Scouting, to meet together, to exchange experiences, and to live together in the spirit of the Scout Oath.

Many scouters develop their best friends in scouting and life through the Wood Badge course, and countless scouts have an immensely better program as a direct result!

Course Requirements

Each Scouter who participates in Wood Badge Training must be a registered adult leader or Venture Scout at least 18 years of age. In addition, the following training must be completed prior to the course. Because of the advanced nature of Wood Badge training, these requirements may not
be waived.

-New Leader Essentials
-Leader Position Specific (Basic) Training
-Youth Protection Training(S.A.F.E Guarding Youth Training(new 2025)

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is also required for Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches, Assistant Varsity Coaches and Venturing leaders who have crews with outdoor programs. Cub Leaders may want to attend BALOO or another cub level outdoor training before the course, but it is not required.

Completion of Parts A, B and C of the BSA Medical Form is required for all participants

Registration investment is only $300, a scout is Brave and Thrifty give them the best leader possible - YOU, just better!
