1-DAY, 2-DAY, AND 5-DAY

HIGH ADVENTURE PROGRAMS

HIKE AND ATV THE BLUE RIDGE SCOUT RESERVATION,

BACKPACK HIGH KNOLL, CANOE AND RAFT THE NEW RIVER,

BIKE THE NEW RIVER TRAIL

 

Scouting fun and adventure on the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation and beyond does not stop after Camp Powhatan and Camp Ottari complete their regular summer seasons. Adventures from 1 to 5 days with difficultly levels from moderate to challenging are available.  After summer camp, do one or do them all.  Space is limited, so sign up soon!

New River Canoe Trek

Two 1-day courses available based on skill level.  Come experience a piece of history on the second oldest river in the world. 

TRIP ONE- CLAYTOR DAM TO 114 BRIDGE- 11 Miles.  Great beginner program.  Mostly flat water with class 1 rapid the last mile.  Put in at the Sportsman store under the 1-81 New River Bridge south of Radford on Rt. 605.  Take out at Rt 114 Bridge north of Radford.  Approx. 6 hours.

TRIP TWO- RIPPLEMEAD TO BLUFF CITY - 8.5 Miles.  Full of Class II- III rapids.  Test your skills on this run and plan to get WET!  Put in at the public boat launch station in Ripplemead on Rt 636.  Take out at the public boat launch station below Rt 460 Bridge north of Pearisburg.  Approx. 6 hours.

Cost:  $50.00. This is a "Provisional Scouting" program meaning units and single Scouts are welcome.  Scouts must be at least 11 years old and passed the BSA Swimmer test.  Participants must provide their own transportation to the "put in" and "take out" locations.  You will get wet, so bring extra clothes, towel, sunscreen, tennis shoes or closed toe sandals.  Bring your lunch and water.  Overnight camping at Camp Powhatan can be arranged.

RAFTING THE NEW RIVER LOWER RAPIDS

The New River winds through Virginia and West Virginia and creates amazing opportunities for adventure.  The steep gorge cliffs produce some of the best whitewater on the east coast.

Meet at 9:00 AM at the Gorge Visitor Center Parking Lot.  Participants must provide their own transportation to the "put in" and "take out" locations.  You will get wet, so bring extra clothes, towel, sunscreen, tennis shoes or closed toe sandals.  Bring your lunch and water.  Overnight camping at Camp Powhatan can be arranged.

Cost:  $80.00.  This is a "Provisional Scouting" program meaning units and single Scouts are welcome.  Scouts must be al least 12 years old and passed the BSA swimmer test.  Reduced pricing for Groups over 10 Scouts.  Guide tips recommended.

BSA 50 MILER ADVENTURE

The BSA 50 miler Program is the perfect way to quickly get acquainted with the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation (13,700 acres of unspoiled wilderness), the New River, and the New River Trail. 

This 5 day and night event consists of 3 days and nights of backpacking and hiking on the High Knoll trails, 1 day of canoeing on the New River, and 1 day of mountain bike riding on the New River Trail State Park.  An excellent program to prepare Scouts considering Philmont and/or Northern Tier Canoe Base.  Base camp for your trek will be Camp Powhatan. 

Each afternoon, crews will participate in activities including experiencing late 1800’s frontier life, shooting black-power muzzle loading rifles, tomahawk throwing, and more.

Cost:  $365.00. This is a "Provisional Scouting" program meaning units and single Scouts are welcome.  Scouts must be 12-1/2 years old, First Class by the start of the week, and passed the BSA swimmer test.  Bring your own mountain bike and helmet.  Cost includes transportation and meals. 

ATV ADVENTURE - 1 DAY

If you are interested in seeing the back country of the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation, this is the trek for you!

Meet at Camp Powhatan parking lot on day of event.  The day will begin with hands-on training using the ATV Safety Institute program.  After training and lunch, you will take off on a guided tour through the 13,700 acres reservation.  Ride will total 10 to 12 miles.  Upon completion Scout will receive an ATV Safety Institute Certificate.

Cost:  $80.00. This is a "Provisional Scouting" program meaning units and single Scouts are welcome.  Scouts must be 16 years old.   At least 6 participants total required.  Appropriate riding clothes must be worn while riding, including long pants, long sleeve shirt, gloves, and boots. 

ATV ADVENTURE – 2 DAYS

If one days not enough for you then here is an opportunity to really throttle it up a notch!  You will get the ATV Safety Institute certification and get to ride up to 20 miles on the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation over 2 days.  Scouts may camp overnight in the back country or staying at Camp Powhatan cab be arranged.

The day will begin with a hands-on training through the ATV Safety Institute.  After training and lunch, you will take off on a guided tour through the 13,700 acres of the reservation.  Each day’s ride will be 10 to 12 miles.  Upon completion Scout will receive and ATV Safety Institute Certificate.  Program will be finished by 3:00 pm on the second day.

Cost:  $160.00.  This is a "Provisional Scouting" program meaning units and single Scouts are welcome.  Scouts must be 16 years old. At least 6 participants total required.  Participants will receive four prepackaged meals (two bagged lunches, a cold breakfast and a hot trail meal for dinner).  Appropriate riding clothes must be worn while riding, including long pants, long sleeve shirt, gloves, and boots. 

Canoe the New - 5 Days

Participants spend 5 days canoeing and rafting 50 miles of the New River area.  They will travel the route of Voyageurs and early explorers.  You will hone your paddling skills as you learn to read rapids.  There will also be time to catch some fish for dinner.  Ride Class V rapids in the famous New River Gorge.  Along the way, you'll earn the Canoeing and Whitewater Merit Badges.

Cost:  $415.00.  This is a "Provisional Scouting" program meaning units and single Scouts are welcome.  Scouts must be 14 years old.

Leaders: For all programs offered ensure that your Scouts and Leaders comply to the Guidelines to Safe Scouting.  Read and comply with the BRSR COVID 19 requirements.
