Range Master Training - Spring (RATA)

Event Details

Range Master Training

All Cub Scout range and target activities (archery, BB guns, wrist rockets/slingshots, catapults, rockets) to be supervised by a certified range master. At the Cub Scout level, BB and archery are only allowed at district and council-operated events and may not be conducted at the pack or den level.

Classroom Training: The 3-hour training course covers setting up a range, safety, handling equipment, maintaining and storing equipment, and instructing Scouts.

In addition to the 3-hour classroom training, candidates must also complete 2 hours of practical training (range time).

Practical Training (range time): After completing classroom training, candidates must complete 2 hours of range time, the practical, hands-on portion of the training, where participants learn to safely operate and supervise shooting sports activities, such as BB guns or archery ranges. This includes learning about range setup, safety procedures, proper equipment handling, and supervising youth participants. For trainings conducted during events like Adventure Camp, the range time is completed on Saturday morning. For trainings not conducted during a Cub Scout event, candidates will need to work with the instructor to complete the range time during a future event with range activities.

The certification is valid for two years from the date of completion. Learn more at shac.org/range-master.

Adventure Camp: Adults who take training on a Friday night of an Adventure Camp weekend and then volunteer on the range all day on Saturday may request a code to waive the fee for range master training and Adventure Camp registration.

Date of Training: Before clicking "Register," please note the training date, as you’ll need it during registration to select the appropriate meal and housing options.
