Nuclear Science Merit Badge sponsored by Women in Nuclear (WIN) and North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN) of Duke Energy's Robinson Nuclear Plant. This event is open to only Scouts from South Carolina.

Open to Scouts ages 13+

Blue Cards will be provided to you after the event.

We as a plant are extremely excited to have the opportunity to help develop young minds on the power of nuclear technology. In doing that we plan on following the Scouts BSA Merit Badge Handbook on Nuclear Science precisely to ensure that all aspects are adequately covered. The organizations that will be leading this badge will be Women in Nuclear and the North American Young Generation in Nuclear. These organizations contain a wealth of cumulative experience in all aspects of our plant. These range from chemistry and radiation protection to engineering and operations.

First off, A little about Robinson Nuclear Plant (RNP):

Single Unit, 735 MW Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR)
Westinghouse 3 Loop Plant
Began Operation March 7, 1971
The first commercial nuclear plant in the South Eastern U.S.
Site once had a combustion turbine (Coal Plant) that generated 175 MW

Secondly, A little about Women in Nuclear (WIN) and North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN):

WIN was founded in 1999

To support an environment in nuclear energy and technologies that promote success

To provide an organized association through which the public is informed about nuclear energy/technology

NAYGN provides opportunities for a young generation of nuclear enthusiasts to develop leadership and professional skills

Engage and inform the public

Inspire todays nuclear technology professionals to meet the challenges of the 21st century

Logistics:

This merit badge session will be held in a day camp format where the scouts will not be staying the night at the plant, but rather will be engaged in activities from 8:30AM until 3:15PM. Check in and welcomes will begin at 8:30 and formal instruction and activities will begin promptly at 9:00AM. RNP will be providing all of the necessary equipment needed for the activities planned through the Nuclear Science Handbook. After lunch, operations and security will take the scouts on a tour of the plant. This will require closed toe shoes that are comfortable. Though we are considerably the smallest plant in our fleet, there will still be a lot of walking involved. To be processed into the plant for the tour, there is additional paperwork that each scout will need to complete prior to arrival at the plant. This paperwork has been provided to the scout master. The scouts will not be taken into any radiologically adverse areas.

Drinks, snacks, and lunch will be provided at the site.

*****READ ME****

Only 15 Scouts can be registered and they will be able to go on the tour of the plant.

A limited number of BSA registered adults may be selected to go on the tour of the plant to ensure 2 deep leadership standards are met.  This will be determined at the event.

All individuals going on the tour MUST be US Citizens and complete a criminal background check.  Forms will be provided after registration and MUST be turned in 2 weeks prior to the event.  Failure to return the forms will have your slot cancelled with no refund.  If you are a BSA registered adult and want the possibility of going on the tour then you must complete the background check forms.

Cameras, cell phones, and any recording devices will not be permitted on the tour.  A Duke Energy Photographer will be present to take pictures.  Parents must also sign a photo release.
