BALOO Spring 2023

Event Details

BALOO training is the Cub Scout leader training required for any Cub Scout den or pack outdoor event, including pack camping overnighters and Webelos den overnighters. BALOO training has two components—an online component and a practical, hands-on component. Both components must be completed to qualify as a “TRAINED” Cub Scout outdoor leader. The online component must be completed prior to the practical component. The practical component is an overnight camping, training session over two days. This course is the introductory step in teaching leaders how to fulfill the promise of the outdoor program. A BALOO trained person must be present on any den or pack outing.

The target participant is a new Cub Scout leader or parent volunteer who has minimal camping experience but wants to plan and carry out an entry-level outdoor experience for the pack. Ideally, the participant is a parent who is not already part of a pack leadership team.

The practical component will be held at Fluor High Adventure Base and Leadership Center at Camp White Pines, 519 Callahan Mountain Road Travelers Rest, SC 29690 from 8 am Saturday, May 13th through Sunday, May 14th (hopefully finishing by noon).

This is an adult training course. It is not appropriate for a pack or family outing. Staff and participants will only be onsite.

The practical component is an overnight camping experience. It will be in tents. One man, three-man, or family size with an air mattress is acceptable. But no hammocks or campers. If you or your Pack don’t have access to a tent, let the course director know and arrangements will be made.

Prerequisite for the course:

YPT- Youth Protection Training

Online training component- accessed through your My.Scouting.org account.

The cost for the practical component part of the course is $40. This includes lunch, dinner, and cracker-barrel Saturday and breakfast Sunday. If you would like to camp Friday night, there is an additional $10 charge for dinner Friday and breakfast Saturday.

The course director will contact participants with additional information on what to bring.
