2022 Online Merit Badge College

This summer Palmetto Council will be offering several merit badge classes online. This is a great opportunity for your scout to earn additonal merit badges after summer camp. Each class will be held on Zoom and a link along with additioanl details and instructions will be sent to participants prior to the class beginning. All sessions will be recorded so that scouts can go back and watch any session they may have missed or wish to review.

In addition to any prerequisites listed, each scout should be prepared to do work outside of hte online instructional tiem period. Prerequisites:
Citizenship in the Nation:

  • Read through, and be familiar with, all requirements for the badge:  citizenship_in_the_nation.pdf (scouting.org)
  • Complete Requirement 8 before the first session and have them send me a copy of the letter and any response back they received.  Requirement 8. Name your two senators and a member of Congress from your congressional district. Write a letter about a national issue and send it to one of these elected officials, sharing your view with him or her. Show your letter to your counselor, along with any response you might receive.
  • Complete Requirement 3 before the second session, preferably having watched/read the news within the prior week so everyone is discussing the same topics.  Requirement 3. Watch the national evening news five days in a row OR read the front page of a major daily newspaper five days in a row. Discuss the national issues you learned about with your counselor. Choose one of the issues and explain how it affects you and your family.
  • For Requirement 2,  before the second session I would like them to email me (willbehrmann@hotmail.com) a short description of which of these two options they completed (a federal facility can include a post office).  Requirement 2. Do TWO of the following:
      a.  Visit a place that is listed as a National Historic Landmark or that is on the National Register of Historic Places. Tell your                     counselor what you learned about the landmark or site and what you found interesting about it.
      b. Tour your state capitol building or the U.S. Capitol. Tell your counselor what you learned about the capitol, its function, and its              history.
      c. Tour a federal facility. Explain to your counselor what you saw there and what you learned about its function in the local                        community and how it serves this nation.
      d. Choose a national monument that interests you. Using books, brochures, the Internet (with your parent’s permission), and other          resources, find out more about the monument. Tell your counselor what you learned, and explain why
