Wilderness First Aid (WFA) is a hands-on training course designed to prepare participants to prevent, assess, and respond to medical emergencies that may occur in remote or back country environments. This course teaches essential skills for managing injuries and illnesses in settings where professional medical care may be hours away.

This course meets or exceeds the BSA Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines, 2017 Edition.

Participants will learn to:

  • Recognize and manage life-threatening emergencies using the Patient Assessment System
  • Treat common wilderness injuries, including bleeding, fractures, sprains, burns, wounds, and environmental illnesses.
  • Manage heat and cold emergencies, dehydration, altitude issues, and allergic reactions
  • Handle medical problems such as abdominal pain, infections, and respiratory issues
  • Make informed decisions about evacuation and extended care
  • Improvise first-aid solutions with limited supplies
  • Work effectively as a team in stressful and/or remote situations

Course Format

16–20 hours of classroom learning, practical skills sessions, and outdoor scenarios

Outdoor practical simulations build confidence in assessing and treating patients in the field and are an important part of the course.  They will be conducted regardless of weather conditions.

Upon successful completion of the course participants will receive both a CPR/AED and Wilderness First Aid Card good for 2 years.
