Wilderness First Aid
Be prepared when help is more than just minutes away.
Wilderness First Aid (WFA) training provides Scouts and
adult leaders with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to
respond effectively to medical emergencies in remote and
backcountry settings.
Wilderness First Aid is more than a course—it is a
commitment to preparedness, leadership, and safety in the
outdoors. Whether your unit is planning a high-adventure
trek, attending summer camp, or heading into the
backcountry, WFA equips participants to assess situations
calmly, make sound decisions, and provide care when
professional medical assistance may be delayed.
This hands-on, scenario-based course focuses on:
Patient assessment and emergency action planning
Treating wounds, burns, fractures, and sprains
Managing environmental emergencies such as heat illness, hypothermia, and
dehydration
Responding to sudden illnesses and life-threatening conditions
Stabilizing and monitoring patients until evacuation or advanced care is available
Participants learn through realistic simulations that build teamwork, communication, and
leadership skills—core values of the Scouting program.
Wilderness First Aid certification is required for at least one adult leader on most high-adventure
treks and is strongly recommended for units participating in backcountry activities. More
importantly, it reinforces the Scout Motto: Be Prepared.
When emergencies happen far from the trailhead, trained leaders and youth can make a
difference. Wilderness First Aid ensures your unit is ready
