Leave No Trace Trainer Course
What: A Leave No Trace Trainer helps to minimize the impact that is caused to the land during outdoor adventures. They accomplish this by learning, teaching, and implementing the principles of Leave No Trace, and low-impact camping, using the tools and methods learned in this course.
Leave No Trace Trainers are instrumental in the Conservation and Outdoor Ethics program of the Boy Scouts of America and can assist BSA camps and their staff with their goals to meet Conservation and Outdoor Ethics related National Camp Accreditation Program requirements (i.e. PD-107, RP-253, & RP-460 from the 2020 standard).
When: Friday, April 23 - 6:00 p.m. to Sunday, April 25 - 9:00 a.m.
Cost: $90 until April 2nd, $100 April 3rd and after. This price includes 1 year of membership with Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics or a 1 year extension if you already have a membership.
Who: This weekend-long course is recommended training for:
- Registered youth in Scouts, BSA and Venturing (at least fourteen (14) years of age or older) who are currently, or are looking to become, Outdoor Ethics Guides in their unit, or who wish to strengthen the Outdoor Ethics program in their unit.
- Registered adult leaders (at least eighteen(18) years of age or older) who are currently, or are looking to become, Outdoor Ethics Guide Advisors in their unit, or who wish to strengthen the Outdoor Ethics program in their units.
- Camp Staff for Day Camp, Family Camp, or Resident Camps who wish to strengthen the Outdoor Ethics program at their camps.
Participants who complete this course will become Leave No Trace Trainers and will receive credentials (certificate and training card), a Leave No Trace Trainer Patch and lapel pin. Record of completion will be kept by the Boy Scouts of America, and the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.
Participants who complete this course will be authorized to conduct the Leave No Trace Center's Leave No Trace Awareness Workshops, as well as the Boy Scouts of America's Outdoor Ethics Orientations, and "Leave No Trace 101" courses.
Important Information for the LNT Trainer Course:
- All participants must turn in a BSA Health and Medical Record Parts A & B during check-in and an LHC COVID Participant Waiver. Adult participants must also turn in Clearances and Youth Protection certificates. Forms will be returned at the end of the course. Forms that are not retrieved will be destroyed.
- All participants must turn in a course waiver from from the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.
- This course involves overnight tent camping and trail hiking (approx. five miles). Participants are responsible for providing their own camping equipment and hiking equipment. Participants should come prepared for the weather and to be outdoors for the entirety of the course.
- Meals for the course are included. Special Dietary requests must be submitted to Mike Manner (mike.manner@scouting.org) no later than Friday, April 16 or they will not be able to be accomodated.
Pre-Course Meeting
Prior to the course, participants will be required to prepare a five to ten-minute presentation on an assigned Leave No Trace topic to be delivered during the course. There will be a pre-course meeting (date TBD) prior to the course to topic assignments and to complete some course presentations to help limit time needed indoors during the actual course weekend.
COVID Safety
- All COVID safety protocols will be followed.
- Participants should review the Pre-Event Medical Screening Checklist prior to leaving home. Anyone who does not pass must stay home.
- Upon arrival, all participants will be screened using the Pre-Event Medical Screening Checklist. Anyone who registers a temperature of 100.0* or higher AND anyone they traveled with will be sent home.
- Participants must provide and wear masks or face coverings throughout the entire course.
- Social distancing must be maintained as much as possible.
