Outdoor Leader Training

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is designed as an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program for leaders interested in adding a camping component to their Pack activities. BALOO training consists of an online pre-requisite component in addition to an overnight hands on practical. Click here to access the prerequisite training.
BSA’s Cub Scout level camping policies will be taught along with the discovery of the necessary tools to help units carry our a successful camping experience. Completion of this course is mandatory for a MINIMUM OF ONE adult on a Pack overnighter.
You’ll be able to do the following after attending BALOO Training:
· Understand the camping equipment needs of an individual and a group of Cub Scouts.
· Demonstrate the proper ingredients of a successful campfire program.
· Describe applicable safety standards for fire, water, and weather considerations.
· Explain how the outdoor program runs progressively through different age levels of Scouting.
· Demonstrate knowledge of foil cooking practices.
· Understand the focus of Cub Scout level outdoor cooking.
· Describe health, safety and sanitation procedures for outdoor activities.
· Organize and lead different types of nature hikes with confidence.
· Demonstrate and supervise the lighting and operation of different styles of camp stoves and lanterns.
· Describe the advantages of using stoves over campfire style cooking.
· Have fun on a campout.

Scouts BSA Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills Training is a one day (indoor) session plus (outdoor) course presented by the Bucktail Council Training Committee. To be considered trained, Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters must attend this session and complete the Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Position Specific Training available through my.scouting.org. The course will begin Friday evening at 6 PM and end Saturday by 7 PM.
There are no prerequisites to attend Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills training, but we do recommend completing Position specific training (Scoutmaster or Committee Member training) through your My.Scouting.org account, Personal Safety, Youth Protection, and Hazardous Weather.
