2025 First Aid Meet

Moraine Trails Council First Aid Meet – March 8th, 2024
Butler Intermediate High School Gymnasium 551 Fairground Hill Rd Butler, PA 16001
Scout Troops from Moraine Trails Council are invited to attend an inter-patrol first aid meet on Friday March 9th at Butler Intermediate High School Gymnasium. Five to eight member patrols (including a nonparticipating victim) will compete by administering proper first aid on the mock victim (or describing actions to a judge) during each of five emergency situations. Come prepared for any reasonable first aid situation and/or surprises. Patrols will stay in their assigned spot while judges rotate to a different patrol for the next problem. One adult judge per patrol registered must be provided by troop. Judges will be assigned to patrols from troops other than their own. ONLY PATROL MEMBERS, VICTIM AND JUDGES ARE TO BE IN THE COMPETITION AREA DURING THE EVENT. Policy forbids smoking in the building and any food in the gymnasium.
Judges will receive scoring criteria and instructions at the Judges briefing to be held at 9:00 am while the Patrols take the written First Aid Quiz. Patrols should check-in at the check-in table before that time. Adults serving as judges need not have any first aid experience, although it may be helpful and informative to the scouts. Judges will score the patrols actions on predetermined criteria. After the problem is read by the announcer, Judges will hand a description of the problem to each patrol who will then have 10 minutes to perform the necessary first aid on the victim. After completion of the problem, a brief five-minute learning/solution time will be allowed while score sheets are tallied for that problem and collected. The newest version of the scout handbook and the first aid merit badge book is the source material. The victim for each group must be clearly be identified and cannot assist or speak during his or her “treatment”. It is highly recommended to register a second year webelos as your victim (during registration) and utilize such as victim, participant or observer. No adult observers can be in the grid and must not participate. Patrol names at registration must be acceptable scout-like names or they will be asked to change. Judges are selected at the discretion of the chairperson. Remember, each troop is responsible for bringing one judge for each of their patrols. All decisions of the judges are final. Judges are registered separately and are not charged. Check in begins at 8:30 am, and we ask that one person check in the patrol (s) per troop. Meet starts at 9:00 am and should conclude by 12:00 pm. We ask that all patrols stay for the final tally, closing and also pick up all of their items. Winning patrols stay for a photo afterwards.
SUGGESTED EQUIPMENT: (partial list) blanket, scout handbook, wood splints (not wet, rotten or cumbersome), first aid kit, pencil and paper, and whatever else deemed necessary to be prepared. No long poles needed for stretchers.
Attention Scoutmasters:
Remember winning isn’t what its all about. But more important, the First Aid Meet should be a continued learning experience for Scouts to be able to treat emergency situations until health care professionals can take over. This is a Scout event. Only registered Scouts and Webelos (as victims) may compete. Patrols must be all male or all female. If you have a lone Scout in need of a Patrol call Amy Kamis at 724 900 1904 Please review all the rules with the adults and scouts attending.
