Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS)
This training is taking place during Rivers Edge Camporee
April 24 - 25, 2026
Registration closes April 10, 2026
Mandatory Prerequisites for IOLS
To be fully trained as a Scouts BSA leader, participants must meet the following requirements, with some components needing completion before the outdoor session:
Current Registration: You must be a currently registered member of a Scouting unit.
Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT): Current certification in SYT is mandatory. This ensures a safe environment for all youth members.
Hazardous Weather Training: You must have current certification for Hazardous Weather training, available online.
Scoutmaster-Specific Training (SST): This position-specific training must be completed (either online or in-person). The IOLS course builds on the concepts taught in SST.
Annual Health and Medical Record: Participants are required to bring a completed paper copy of the BSA Annual Health and Medical Record (Parts A and B only) to the course check-in.
Overnight Stay: The IOLS course itself involves an overnight camping component as part of the hands-on instruction, which participants must attend in its entirety to receive credit.
The online components (SYT, Hazardous Weather, Scoutmaster-Specific, etc.) can be accessed through the my.scouting.org website. After logging in, select the "BSA Learn Center" or "My Training" section to find and launch the required courses. You may need to provide proof of completion (e.g., printed certificates) when you arrive at the in-person IOLS training.
All participants will be expected to spend Friday night camping on site. IOLS will start at 7:30PM on Friday, and end after campfire on Saturday.
No walk-ons or onsite registration will be permitted.
Participants will need to bring their 10 essentials, meal kit, water bottle/coffee mug. A syllabus with more detail will be emailed to participants before the course.
Except for Saturday breakfast, participants will be expected to eat all of their meals with the unit they came with.
For those who did not come with a unit, Saturday Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner will be provided.
