Grit Started Here.

In 1918 Camp Chinidere was opened on Whatum Lake, 12 miles Southwest of Cascade Locks in the Mt. Hood National Forest. It was the first summer camp in the Portland Council.  The camp hosted up to 150 Scouts that stayed for 2 weeks at a time. Activities included: swimming twice a day, fishing, rafting, horse and rider, forestry, trek up to the peak of Chinidere Mountain, and hiking numerous trails hitting 15 different waterfalls. Having been operating for seven years in the summer of 1925 a fire unfortunately destroyed the camp leading to group of Volunteers and Staff to search for a new location for facilities.

Council History

When Camp Chinider had opened the local group of Scouters had just two years prior created the Portland Council. This later became the Portland Area Council from merging with the Mt. St. Helens Council in 1932. After a name change to Columbia Pacific and the addition of more counties, a merger with the Cascade Area Council lead to what is today the Cascade Pacific Council.
