Annual OA Crater Lake National Park Service Project
Coordinated & Hosted by OA Lo La'Qam Geela Lodge
August 12th
Open to ALL Scouts BSA Members as well as family members
Fees
Participation Fee: $5.00 to cover lunch costs
Limited Offering of Class B Event Shirts: $10.00
Available for purchase on a first-come, first served basis at check-in. Scouts will be encouraged to wear event shirts during the project. Please bring cash or check if you intend to purchase a shirt.
Campsite
Lost Creek Campground
(Our council is very large and some units that want to participate have been offered the opportunity to arrive Friday and participate in the OA event. The Park has asked us to collect numbers of participants that plan to camp so please notify us if your unit is planning to do so)
Located off Pinnacles Road. This campsite is closed to the public and only available by invite from the National Park Service. This is a dry/rustic campsite with port-a-potties. Water must be packed in. No campfires.
Service Project Details
Trail Work on the Rim Trail
near North Junction or Lightning Springs picnic area
Details: Specific location and tasks will be provided by the Trail Crew lead of the week. This could be trail delineation or restoration. Be prepared with comfortable work shoes, gloves, and sun protection. Hard hats will be provided on-site if needed. Breaks, refreshments, and lunch will be provided at the worksite by the OA Lodge. Bear lockers are stationed at all campsites.
Additional Service Project: Trail Angels
Details: We will have a ater station running for thru hikers on the Rim Trail. Scouts working directly on the trail will have the option to rotate through this part of the project over the course of the day. We invite all participants to bring some extra fruit to share.
Event Highlights
- Build friendships with Scouts across the council while supporting our national parks
- Free entry to the park and opportunity to do some site-seeing and visit the gift shops
- Scouts participating in the entire service program will be registered to receive the rare Scout Ranger Patch provided directly by the National Parks Service
- All registered attendees will receive a limited edition Crater Lake OA Service Patch
- All registered attendees will have earned 8 hours of conservation service hours

Program Schedule
Schedule is subject to updates and will be shared with participants
FRIDAY (NON-program Day, just gets you onsite for the Saturday event)
- Arrive - You must notify the Park Ranger(s) at the entry that you are arriving to participate in the Scouts BSA service project
- Check-in at Lost Creek Campground for site assignments and to get service project details
- Troops/families provide their own meals and cracker barrel.
- Set-up camp and enjoy one of the best starry views in Oregon.
SATURDAY
For units and or families that have arrived on Friday:
- 6:00 AM - Breakfast
- 6:45 AM - Depart Lost Creek Campground
- 7:45 AM - Check-in at service project location
SERVICE PROJECT PROGRAM
- 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM - Service Project
- ~ 12:00 PM - Lunch provided by the OA Lodge
- Sandwiches/lettuce wrap station, fruit, veggies, chips, and snacks will be provided. Gluten free and vegetarian options will be available.
- 6:00 PM - Sunset Social hosted by the OA Lodge
- Location to be finalized, proposed site is Sunset Notch. Participants will participate in OA-hosted games, skits, patch trading, and trading post
END OF SERVICE PROJECT, for those that have joined us and will remain at the Park:
- Discretion of each Troop - Return to camp
- 10:30 PM - Lights out
SUNDAY
- Participants are invited to enjoy the park and depart at their leisure
Packing List
- Class A Scouting Uniform with OA Sash, if applicable
- Tent, sleeping gear, camp chair, or blanket
- Jacket, hat, warm socks
Temperatures drop at night - Water bottle
To be used for water only - Mug
- Mess kit and food for meals not provided by the OA Lodge
- Headlamp and/or flashlight
- Comfortable work pants, work gloves that fit, hat that shades neck, shoes with good traction
- Scouting 10 Essentials
Emphasis on sun protection (sunscreen) and bug spray - Health Form Parts A & B
- Permission Slip to participate
- Toiletries
To be stored in bear lockers or vehicles when not in use - Medications, to be managed by units
