Citizenship In the Nation Merit Badge

Event Details

Understanding how our government works helps Scouts become good, informed citizens of the United States.  Join us at the Council office to earn the Eagle rank required Citizenship in the Nation Merit Badge.

 

 

As Scouts fulfill the requirements for this merit badge, they will learn how to become active citizens are aware of and grateful for their liberties and rights, to participate in their governments and protect their freedom, helping to defend their country and standing up for individual rights on behalf of all its citizens.

There will be two sessions to earn the Merit Badge, Scouts must attend both, or they will receive a partial completion.

Ahead of time--

--Obtain and fill out a blue card from your Scoutmaster for this merit badge.

--Download and print off the latest Citizenship in the Nation workbook, with the updates from November 2023.

--Do Requirement 8—Find and name your Representative and two Senators in the United States Congress.

Session 1—Requirements 1 – 3, 8, and begin 4 if time allows. Bring a pencil or pen, your phone if you have one, and your printed copy of the workbook.

Session 2—Requirement 6, discuss requirements 5 and 7, and complete requirements 8 and 4 if not already done last session. Bring a pencil or pen, your phone if you have one, and your printed copy of the workbook.

On Your Own. These may be done the week in-between the class sessions OR these may be done ahead of time before the merit badge workshop begins.

—Requirement 5—Watch the national news for five days in a row OR read the main stories in a national media organization (newspaper or news website) for five days in a row. List your starting and ending dates. Describe in writing at least two national issues you learned about.

---Requirement 7—Discuss with your family or scoutmaster which of these places (National Historic Landmark, National Historic Place, State or National Capitol, Federal Facility, or National Monument) that you have visited. Describe in writing where you went, what you saw, what you learned, its function if it has one, and why that place is important to the country.
