WHAT IS WOOD BADGE?

Wood Badge is Scouting’s premier training course! It’s an advanced, national leadership course open to all Scouters from Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, Sea Scouts and Explorers. The course is a multifaceted presentation of leadership skills, organizational tools, and participatory activities based on the best of Scouting traditions and the latest in team development theory.  Participants will enjoy the fellowship of learning alongside other Scouting volunteers and professional Scouters, all while having a great deal of fun. At the culmination of the course, participants will receive a certificate, a Wood Badge neckerchief, a leather slide (woggle) and two wooden beads on a leather thong.

Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, designed the course so that Scouters could learn, in as practical a way as possible, the skills and methods of Scouting. It is first and foremost, learning by doing. The participants of the course are formed into dens, progressing through Cub Scouts as a Pack. As they progress, each den will crossover into Scouts BSA and become patrols and these patrols form a troop. The troop lives in the outdoors for both weekends, camping, cooking their own meals, and practicing Scout skills.

Lord Baden-Powell directed the first Wood Badge course in 1919 at Gilwell Park in England. He gave each of the participants a necklace with two wooden beads, which came from the necklace he found that belonged to the African Chieftain Dinuzulu. The Chieftain’s necklace was known as iziQu, in Zulu, and were presented to brave warrior leaders. Thus the course name, Wood Badge, developed for its symbol was a badge of wood.
