Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS)

Learn the Skills to Lead Scouts Outdoors

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) provides adult leaders with the hands-on outdoor skills needed to confidently teach Scouts the requirements through First Class rank. The course follows the outdoor skills found in the Scouts BSA Handbook and is a required part of basic training for many Scouts BSA leaders.

Course Overview

IOLS is the outdoor skills component of basic leader training. To be considered fully trained, leaders must complete:

  • Scouts BSA Scoutmaster Specific Training or Venturing Leader Specific Training
  • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS)

During the weekend, participants will practice the outdoor skills they'll be teaching Scouts, including camping, cooking, knots and lashings, fire building, map and compass, outdoor ethics, and more.

Do I Need IOLS?

IOLS is required for direct-contact leaders serving in Scouts BSA troops and is also part of the recommended training for Venturing leaders completing their basic training.
