Lion Guide Training

Event Details

Dear Cub Scout Leader,

During the 2016/2017 scouting year, Simon Kenton Council engaged in the national Boy Scouts of America’s “Lion” pilot program, which is a new level of Cub Scouting designed for kindergartners. You can learn more about the national rollout of the Lion program here: http://scoutingwire.org/lion/.  Simon Kenton specific information about the pilot in our Council is available here: www.skcscouts.org/lion.

We are off to a great start.

In our first year of the pilot, 51 packs in our Council were invited to participate and these packs recruited nearly 400 Lions.  Here’s the really good news – over 91% of the families recruited in 2016 are still involved in scouting today and are ready to launch into Tigers this Fall.  They will serve as a terrific springboard for their packs’ Tiger recruiting efforts as they share their experiences with other rising first graders.  These participating packs also now have the benefit of additional trained parent volunteers, each of which was invited to take a turn organizing and leading a Lion’s meeting in their first year of Scouting.

Pack Registration is Open Now for Fall Participation in the Lion Pilot

In view of this successful first year, Simon Kenton Counsel has committed to continuing our participation in the national Lion pilot program.  In fact, we are expanding it.  This year ALL packs in the Simon Kenton Council are invited to participate.  Here are the steps to join the program:

1.     Register your Pack now for participation in the Fall here .

2.     Identify an existing, experienced Scouter in your pack to serve as a “Lion Guide.” Note: this person will serve as a facilitator for the new scout parents in the Fall rather than a traditional Den Leader.

3.     Have the Lion Guide attend training over the summer months unless already completed (VERY IMPORTANT).

4.     Recruit Kindergarteners in the Fall.

5.     Run the program as designed.

You can direct any questions about the Lion pilot program to this email address, questions@skcbsa.org.  Also, the Council’s Lion page, www.skcscouts.org/lion, will be kept updated with current information, FAQs, training dates, recruiting materials, and more.
