WHY ATTEND?
Take a deep dive into the seven principles of Leave No Trace and best practices for implementing them in a hands-on environment, including how to teach them to others. Upon successful course completion, graduate as a certified Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Registered BSA members ages 18 and older who serve with a unit conducting high adventure treks or working with all programs (Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, Venturing or Sea Scouting), summer camp staff, camp hosts, or training team members. Course size is limited to 12 adults.
COURSE CONTENT:
- How to minimize impact in the outdoors by making informed and conscientious decisions.
- Hands-on activities and games to illustrate the importance and meaning of the Leave No Trace principles
- Backcountry techniques, such as how to select a campsite, hang and use a bear bag, dig a cat hole, dispose of dishwater, build a mound fire, and much more. Plus, consider frontcountry needs with Leave No Trace.
- Effective ways to teach others about Leave No Trace and learning styles. All participants will teach a 10-15 minute presentation on an assigned topic of Leave No Trace.
- 16-hour course, with at least half of the course held outdoors.
COURSE DETAILS:
- Registration deadline: 11:59 p.m. Friday, October 11, 2024 -- No late registrations accepted.
- Check-in: 5:00-6:00 p.m. Friday, October 25 at Camp Gray Program Building
- Departure: Sunday, October 27 by 12:00 noon
- Cost: $60 per participant. Fee covers all food, course materials, and supplies. Course size is limited to 12 participants.
PREREQUISITES:
- Completed BSA Medical Form, Parts A and B
- A desire to learn more about Outdoor Ethics and Leave No Trace, and a desire to teach others about it.
- Prepare a presentation on one of the seven principles of Leave No Trace to deliver during the course. Topics will be assigned by the close of course registrations.
All participants will receive emails with their teaching assignment, equipment packing list, and campsite location following registration.
