SM Basic Training 2025

Event Details

Scoutmaster Basic Training

Are you a new Scoutmaster or ASM?  Thank you for jumping into the volcano!

Scoutmaster Basic Training will give you all the tools you need to lead and train the youth of your Scout Troop.  And we'll do it in an outdoor experience that will give you a lived appreciation for the challenges of a youth learning to lead in a weekend campout.

In this course, you will learn how to deliver on the promise we made to your youth when they signed up for Scouting.  You will learn your proper role in a youth-led unit.  You'll learn how to help them plan, organize and deliver the troop's program.  You'll find new resources and learn how to work with your Troop Committee.  You will get hands-on experience with all the outdoor Scout skills required for a new scout to advance.  You'll learn not only how to be comfortable on a campout but how to teach your other leaders to be successful, too.  You will live the Patrol Method.  After completing this training, you will know how to deliver the full Scouting Program to your Troop.

This course integrates the Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training with the Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training which are required for all Scoutmasters and ASMs and recommended for any adult leader of outdoor events.

Youth Protection Training (YPT Y01) and Hazardous Weather (SCO_800) are prerequisites for this course. Both can be taken online at my.scouting.org.

Please come prepared to be outdoors all weekend.  You will need your Scout Uniform, tent, sleeping bag and pad, mess kit, etc.  A detailed list of what to bring will be sent via e-mail upon registration for the course.  The course textbook is your Scouts BSA Handbook (current edition).

All food, facilities & course materials are included in the course fee.

Note: Your completed registration will be acknowledged by automatic email. But … you are not ACCEPTED into this course until you have RESPONDED to a personal email from the Course Director.

Future Offerings:

Scoutmaster Basic Training is offered the second full weekends of each April and September.  Check the Council Calendar for future dates.  Registration for next year's sessions will open in October.
