Firelands Scout Reservation

Scouts can join us Friday night and choice between the following Merit Badges Classes: Prerequisites will be added once they are confirmed by the merit badge counselors. As always each Scout is responsible for during every part of the merit badge and coming prepared to have a discussion about each requirements. 

 

Friday! 

Leatherworking 

Totin' Chip - This is needed because the scouts will be working with knives and other cutting tools

I know that it is not a requirement for the Merit Badge to have; however, it is part of Requirement 1a. This is how I mitigate hazards

Requirement #4: Braid or Plait an article out of leather, vinyl lace or paracord. This is a project that must be brought with them to the MB class.

Requirement #5: there are 4 options here:

Learn and write a report about the commercial tanning process.

Tan the skin of a small animal. If this is done, the tanning should be brought with them and the Scout needs to be able to describe the tanning process and safety precautions taken.

Recondition or show proper care of a leather product:

Shoes (can be brought in)

Baseball glove (can be brought in)

Saddle (before/after pictures will work or can be brought in)

Furniture (before/after pictures)

Another form of leather product (if small enough it should be brought in)

Visit (Show a picture of your visit) and write a report on a leather related business. An example of this:Leather supply company

A tannery (I know there are some in area but are difficult to visit)

A leather goods store (examples of this could be: Avon Boot Shop, A Harley Davidson Dealership) 

A shoe factory

A saddle shop

Pulp and Paper  

Ask them to neatly fill out as much as possible of this worksheet (attached and linked below) before arriving. (preferably typed out in each section) In particular section 7E which requires some investigation.  They must bring these sheets this with them and a pen or pencil.

Chess  

- 3 (using EDGE method to teach a scout how to play chess) 

- bring a chess set with you. ( We will have some available as well) 

Saturday Classes: 

Morning: 

Health Professionals: Please be ready to discuss each profession,  This merit badge requires that the scout shadow a person from one of the lists.   Also, they are required to participate in a health-related event in the community as well.  

Public Health : 5,7

Coin Collecting  

- 6, 7, 9 - bring with you

- 5, 10

- bring current collection  

Afternoon:  

Crime Prevention:5,6,7

Fingerprinting: None  

Communication Requirements 4,5 and 8

All Day Courses: 

First Aid 1, 2,   5a, 5b and 7b, 14 - Scouts should have knowledge about all requirements to be able to discuss during class.

Emergency Prepardness: 1, 2c, 6a, 6b, 6c, 7a, 7b, 9 (choice of a, b, or c). Please note per the merit badge counselor This is a challenging and extensive badge. I would like scouts to come with the prerequisites above, completed, and where appropriate a SM or ASM signature stating that they completed it in full compliance with the written requirement

Search and Rescue  4 and 6a

 

Tent sites will be provided but cabin rentals will need to be made in the reservation site
