2026 Northwoods Cycling Adventure

High Adventure Mini-Trek: Walker Bicycle Trip

Gear up for the ultimate cycling challenge. The Northern Lights Council presents the first in a series of mini-treks designed for individuals looking for a challenge while exploring the beautiful lakes country of Minnesota. Based on the scenic shores of Leech Lake in Walker, MN, participants will camp right off the famous Paul Bunyan Bike Trail and tackle some of the best paved trails the state has to offer.

Trip Highlights

  • Epic Trail Riding: Conquer 30 to 40 miles per day along the Heartland, Migizi, Paul Bunyan, and Great Pyrenees trails.
  • Itasca State Park Excursion: Spend a full day riding the Wilderness Drive, standing at the headwaters of the Mississippi River, and exploring historic sites like the Wegmann Cabin and Mary Lake.
  • Youth Leadership: Scouts will actively exercise leadership by helping to plan the specific daily trip routes.

Schedule and Eligibility

  • Dates: July 23rd (Arrival after 6:00 PM; please eat dinner before arriving) to July 26th (Pick-up at 4:30 PM).
  • Cost: $100 per participant. This covers campsite fees, food, insurance, and council fees.
  • Eligibility: Scouts must be at least 12 years old and have achieved the First Class rank. Completion of the Cycling Merit Badge is highly recommended.

Gear and Logistics

Two experienced volunteer leaders will head this trek. To ensure a safe and high-quality experience, space is strictly limited. Food and cooking gear will be provided for the participants to prepare their meals.

What you need to provide:

  • A road bike (e-bikes are not allowed)
  • Riding gear: helmet, appropriate clothing, water bottles, and rain gear
  • Camping gear: tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and a mess kit
  • Annual Health & Medical Record (Parts A and B)

Adult Volunteers Needed! The troop requires an Adult Volunteer SAG Wagon Driver to assist with transport and logistics during the trek. If you are able to help support the Scouts in this role, please contact the leaders.
