Cub Scouts, Scouts-BSA, Venturers, Explorers, and Adults are all invited to participate! You can race for competition or just for Fun! Cub Scouts must attend with a parent or a pack.

Orienteering is an international sport that consists of finding control markers in the field from locations marked on a map. This year’s competition will start in the main camp area by the dining hall. Each team gets a new 5-color map 20 minutes before the race starts. There are many flags/markers marked on the map and you must find all you can during the allot time. Some flags are very easy to find and some are hard. Each flag is worth 5, 10, 15, 20, or 30 points, depending on how hard it is to find. Plan your strategy to find the most flags and maximize your score!! The Orange & White control markers in the field are identified with a number to let you know if you have found the right flag. To prove you found the marker you punch the score card with a pin punch that is attached to each marker. Each pin punch has a different pattern. Orienteering is a team event, so be sure to register with a buddy or as a group.

At least TWO registered adults must accompany each Cub Scout team. Your team needs a compass and a watch or stopwatch so you’ll finish on time. Participants should bring full canteens or water bottles, and cups for drinking water at water stops. In order to help control litter, no cups are provided at the water stops. The sections of camp we use for orienteering have some areas of thick vegetation and can be very steep at time. Wear long pants and good trail shoes or boots.

When – September 17, 2022. Registration at 8 AM, Opening at 9 AM, Lunch at 12 PM, Closing at 4 PM

Who – All Scouts are encouraged to come to camp for the Orienteering Challenge.

What - During the morning there will age specific instructions provided. In the afternoon there will be a staggered start orienteering event that will take place around the entire Camp property for youth of all ages. The event will be scored as per official orienteering rules.

Cub Scouts are invited to come for the day with a parent. In the morning they will receive basic orienteering skill instructions. Cub Scouts can participate in the afternoon Orienteering Challenge with a parent or as a group with their den/pack with at least 2 adults present.

Scouts-BSA are invited to come for the day. In the morning the will work on the requirements for Orienteering Merit Badge OR Geocaching Merit Badge and in the afternoon the can participate in the Orienteering Challenge with a buddy or as a group.

Venturers, Explorers, and Sea Scouts are invited for the day. In the morning the will work on Land Navigation Skills for the Ranger award and in the afternoon the can participate in the Orienteering Challenge with a buddy or as a group.

Everyone staying for the day must be registered.

Health Forms: All adults and Scouts must compete the BSA health forms parts A and B prior to attending the Orienteering Challenge. You do not need to turn the form in but you must have the form with you.
