March Merit Badge Day; Collections & Scouting Heritage

Event Details

Our March Merit Badge Day will be a Collections and Scouting Heritage 2-parter hosted by our freinds with the Council Historical Society. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our Scouting Memorabilia collection here at the council office; as well as scouting history and hobby collecting broadly. The badges will be offered from 10am-2:30pm on Saturday March 25th; a pizza lunch will be provided. Please make sure to notify us of any dietary needs during registration so we can let you know if we will be able to accomodate for lunch. Cost of registration for the Event will be $40 for the full day and both merit badges. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to take the badge with the absolute council experts on the collection of scouting memorabilia and we only have 24 spots available, so register now!

Pre-requisites

Scouting Heritage:

 2. Do the following:

(a) Give a short biographical summary of any TWO of the following, and tell of their roles in how Scouting developed and grew in the United States.

(1) Daniel Carter Beard             (4) Ernest Thompson Seton     (2) William D. Boyce

(5) James E. West                       (3) Waite Phillips                        (6) “Green Bar Bill” Hillcourt

***The Scout Should research two of these figures prior to attending the merit badge day, and bring some notes or a short write-up about each so that they can present what they learned to their counselor***

5. Learn about the history of your unit or Scouting in your area. Interview at least two people (one from the past and one from the present) associated with your troop. These individuals could be adult unit leaders, Scouts, troop committee members, or representatives of your troop’s chartered organization. Find out when your unit was originally chartered. Create a report of your findings on the history of your troop, and present it to your patrol or troop or at a court of honor, and then add it to the troop’s library. This presentation could be in the form of an oral/written report, an exhibit, a scrapbook, or a computer presentation such as a slide show.

***The scout should do their interviews, take notes and prepare their report prior to attending the merit badge day. We will have the scouts give their presentations to each other during the class. If the scout has not had the opportunity to give a presentation to their troop prior to the merit badge day, that requirement will be left with a note to be signed off by their scoutmaster for completion of badge***

6. Make a collection of some of your personal patches and other Scouting memorabilia. With their permission, you may include items borrowed from family members or friends who have been in Scouting in the past, or you may include photographs of these items. Show this collection to your counselor, and share what you have learned about items in the collection. (There is no requirement regarding how large or small this collection must be

***Scout Should prepare their collection and bring it (or pictures) with them on the day. Scout should be able to speak to some level about the items in their collection***

Collections:

Prepare a short written report or outline for your counselor, giving a detailed description of your collection,* including a short history. Be sure to include why you chose that particular type of collecting and what you enjoy and have learned from your collection.

***Scout should bring part of their collection or pictures of it to the merit badge day. Scouts can use the same collection that they used for Scouting Heritage, but it should be noted that Collections requires the scout to have a more developed collection and knowledge of it, than is required for Req. 6 of Scouting Heritage. While they are not pre-requisites, scouts should look at requirements 2-7 prior to attending and begin thinking about how the content covered there relates to their collections***

8. Find out about career opportunities in collecting. Pick one and find out the education, training, and experience required for this profession. Discuss this with your counselor and explain why this profession might interest you.

***Scouts should do research on a profession related to collecting prior to attending, take some notes, and be prepared to discuss what they learned with their counselor on the day of the class***
