General Info
Please register at the Klondike derby headquarters upon arrival.
Absolutely no one should be in the water. Troops will be sent home immediately if any such infraction occurs.
Cost for the event will be $15 per settler, farmer, rancher, miner, or business owner. Patrols/teams are to be a maximum size of eight (8) youth to ensure that all settlers can be an active participant and to limit the size of groups working together. A minimum of two deep leadership is required.
Patrols will be given a map and scheduled rotation to follow at the start. All units that participate in the Oregon Trail event will receive a patch. Patches per registered youth and adult will be awarded at a later date.
Top scoring patrols will receive prize packages.
A grand prize package for 1st place will be awarded and the Klondike trophy will be passed along.
Scoring for each activity up to the maximum coins allowed per category will be awarded at the stations. Bonus coins can be earned.
Travelers dressed adequately for the weather/activity and equipment precheck = 5 coins
Navigating using a compass and/or GPS unit = 5 coins
Fire building = 5 coins =
Shelter building, Knots & Lashings = 5 coins
First aid scenario = 5 coins
Maple Syrup = 5 coins
Tree identification & Animal tracks = 5 coins
Units will need to provide lunch for their own scouts/adults. Potable water is available. Portable toilets available for youth, flushable toilets for adult use only.
Firewood will be available.
Units are asked to bring a shareable dish to pass Saturday night. Theme and/or period appropriate food encouraged. Please provide a general list of ingredients in your dish for food allergy purposes. Units will be asked at Friday nights leader meeting what they will be bringing. Dishes that include gluten, dairy, or peanut free options are encouraged.
Units are reminded to always follow the principles of leave no trace.
All participants, youth, and adults must bring with them an updated Part A and B of their Annual Health and Medical Record. These forms will be returned at the end of the event. Forms can be found on your confirmation page as well on Nationals website and a link in the confirmation email. Part A will be retained by the Council after the event.
Activities
- Patrol pre trip inspection is worth up to 5 coins. Patrols will be inspected by the mayor and asked to provide the following:
- All settlers dressed appropriately for work and the weather for the day’s activities including but not limited to warm outer clothing including winter hat and gloves as well as boots. NO SNEAKERS ALLOWED.
- The patrol has all the specified equipment on the list and it is in good working order.
- The patrol has adequate water available to all settlers.
- Navigation is worth up to 5 coins. While at this station, settlers will be asked to navigate a course using a combination of compass skills as well as utilizing their handheld GPS unit. All settlers are expected to arrive at the Klondike with an understanding of how to operate the compass and their patrols GPS unit. GPS units will not be provided. Patrols are reminded to follow the principals of leave no trace while traveling.
- Fire building is worth up to 5 coins. The settlers in the patrol will be asked to complete a challenge using their fire building and igniting skills. Absolutely NO man-made fire starters or propellants are permitted to be used. If any use is attempted, it will result in an automatic 0 coins for the activity. Scouts may use any of the approved fire lays found in the scout handbook. Settlers will be provided with a flint and steel and a few other provided items. Scouts are reminded to use the principals of leave no trace in reference to their fire building activities. Absolutely NO cutting of live trees is permitted.
- Shelter building, Knots & Lashings is worth up to 5 coins. Settlers will be asked to execute a series of knots/lashings to complete a specified task.
- First Aid is worth up to 5 coins. Scouts of the patrol will discuss with the designated first aid adult what it means to and why it is important to dress appropriately for all the anticipated weather conditions while in the outdoors. Scouts will discuss what health and first aid issues they might encounter if ill prepared for changes in weather conditions. The patrol will be given first aid scenarios. Scouts will analyze the scenarios and address any and all safety concerns and dangers as well as injuries that are included in those scenarios. Scouts are scored on participation of the entire patrol as well as their ideas on how to address safety and injury scenarios given.
- Maple Syrup. Settlers will participate in a presentation as well as a hands on task.
- Tree identification & animal tracks is worth up to 5 coins. Patrols will be asked to identify specified trees and tracks along a trail.
