This event is a challenge of marksmanship involving archery shooting, tomahawk throwing, rifle, and shotgun shooting. The competition weighs each scored station equally and awards for events will be given to troops. In addition, Whitetails Unlimited is sponsoring Kids on Target: All Three in the Red Rifle Challenge and Kids On Target: Archery Challenge. Medals will be awarded to those scouts who qualify at either challenge. Bonus points will be awarded for full troop participation in events and activities. Join us for this fun-filling weekend that will test your aim, concentration, and team work.

$30 per Scout and Scouter

Includes registration, patch, camping, ammunition,     Saturday lunch and chicken BBQ dinner

Scouters must be 12 years of age or older to shoot rifle and shotgun

This is a Scouts BSA level event

General Information

  • All units must register online or at the scout shop.
  • Unit leaders must either bring with them to the event or turn in at the scout shop a firearms permission slip found on page 9 of the event packet, or in attachmenof the packet or as a download on the registration page for each youth participant. If the youth does not have a permission slip signed by parent or guardian, they CANNOT participate in shooting sports.
  • Units must bring and turn in completed BSA Med forms for all adults and participants upon check in. Forms will be returned at the end of the event when lanyards are turned in and patches are received.
  • Units should bring or will be asked to fill out an additional Part A for each registrant. This form will be kept for photo release purposes.
  • Online registration will end Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 11:59pm.
  • Registration at the scout store with end Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at (closing time).
  • Registration for the event is open to the first 150 participants.
  • The registration deadline is firm and there will be absolutely no exceptions.
  • Check-in will be at the Whitetail Buck Hunters’ Association club house.
  • A good scout is always prepared. This a spring outdoor event where some light hiking will be required between event locations. Please be prepared by having appropriate footwear (boots not sneakers), and clothing appropriate for weather conditions. This is a rain or shine event.
  • Camping for the event is in an open field. Depending on the weather and ground conditions, vehicles will be allowed at the campsite location.
  • Fires are allowed; however, they are to be elevated and contained in a half barrel. Absolutely no ground fires. Limited firewood will be available for purchase. Fire buckets full of water in close proximity to your fire is mandatory. Fire buckets can be filled at the Sullivan Trail Rod & Gun Club building.
  • Troops are encouraged to bring their own potable water for cooking, cleaning, and consumption. Limited potable water will be available at the camping area as well as both club house locations.
  • Handicapped assessable porta-johns will be placed at the camping area and at the Sullivan Trail Club House. A wash stand will be placed at the Sullivan Trail Club House. Standard porta-johns will be available at all three event areas. Scouts are not allowed to use the indoor restrooms at either clubhouse.
  • Registration fee includes Saturday lunch as well as a chicken BBQ dinner (chicken half, roll, 2 sides, drink and dessert) at the Sullivan Trail Club House.
  • Breakfast is available for purchase at a cost of $6.00 at Sullivan Trail Club House both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Breakfast will be scrambled eggs, sausage and pancakes with juice and hot chocolate. Preregistration for Saturday and Sunday breakfast is encouraged.
  • Registration fee includes all ammunition, fire arm use, targets, and safety gear. Absolutely no outside firearms or ammunition allowed at this event.
  • Qualifying for either Whitetail Challenge events on Sunday are free.
  • SCOUTS AND ADULTS WITH FOOD ALLERGIES SHOULD ARRANGE TO SUPPLY THEIR OWN FOOD IF NECESSARY.

 

Event Station Description

Station 1: 22 Caliber Rifle

SCORED STATION

MUST BE 12 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER TO SHOOT RIFLE

A brief safety instruction will be given at this station.

  • Each person will shoot a total of 20 to 25 times at a stationary target from a bench, at a distance of 50 feet.
  • The target sheet will be provided by the instructors.
  • Each person will place their name and Troop number on a target sheet and place it on a target stand as directed.
  • Each person will receive instruction on loading and shooting at the target by the instructor.
  • Upon the completion of shooting instruction each person will collect their target sheet and turn it in for scoring.

Whitetails Unlimited Challenge

Caliber Rifle Whitetail Challenge

  • Each person will shoot three rounds of ammunition at a stationary target at a distance of 50 or 75 yards from the offhand, kneeling or prone position.
  • Each target sheet will have one target circle.
  • Each person will place their name and Troop number on the target sheet.
  • The target sheet will be reviewed, if all 3 rounds fired are within the red circle congratulations you have completed the white tail challenge. Turn in the target sheet to collect prize.
  • When directed by an instructor each person will place their target to the target stand.  When directed by the instructor each person will fire 3 rounds of ammunition at the target.

Station 2: 20 Gauge Shotgun

SCORED STATION

  • MUST BE 12 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER TO SHOOT SHOTGUN
  • A brief safety instruction will be given at this station.
  • Each person will shoot a total of 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition at this station.
  • Each person will place their name and troop number on a squad sheet.
  • Follow direction from the instructor to the trap substation.
  • At each substation you follow directions from the instructor and load and fire the shotgun at a moving clay target as many times as required at that substation.
  • When all substations have been completed turn in the squad sheet.

Station 3: BB GUNS

  • A brief safety instruction will be given at this station
  • This station will be hosted by the National Wild Turkey Federation
  • Each scout will be directed by the instructor and will shoot at stationary targets.
  • Each scout will turn in their target to be scored by the instructor.

Station 4: Archery

A brief safety instruction will be given at this station

Scored Station

  • Held hosted by the Whitetail Buck Hunters Association
  • Each person will shoot 20 to 25 arrows at a stationary target at a distance of 6 yards.
  • Each person will enter their name and troop number on a score sheet.
  • Each person will be directed by the instructor to shoot 4 to 5 flights of 5 arrows scoring each flight.
  • Each score sheet will be turned in.

Whitetail Archery Challenge

  • Each person will shoot 3 arrows at a stationary target at a distance of 12 yards.
  • Each person will write their name on a target sheet.
  • Each person will be directed by the instructor to place the target on the target stand.
  • Each person will be directed by the instructor to shoot a flight of 3 arrows at the target.
  • Each person will be directed by the instructor to score and retrieve their target sheet from the target stand.
  • Each target sheet that has been scored with all three arrows in the red has completed the whitetail archery challenge.
  • Turn in target sheet to collect prize.

Station 5: Laser Pistol

A brief safety instruction will be given at this station.

Scored Station

  • This is an indoor event.
  • Each scout will shoot at a projected target on a screen, the scouts score will be tabulated by the computer and the score will be recorded.

Station 6: Fly Fishing Tying

  • Hosted by Trout Unlimited
  • Scouts will be given instruction on fly tying and given the opportunity to make their own artificial fly to catch fish.

Station 7: Fly Fishing Casting

  • Hosted by Trout Unlimited
  • Scouts will be given a demonstration of fly casting by instructors.
  • Scouts will have the opportunity to practice fly casting on the pond

Station 8: Bass Tournament Fishing

  • Local bass tournament fishermen will provide information on what is required to enter a bass fishing tournament and the regulations that must be followed.

Station 9: Hover Archery

(This station is for under the age of 12 only)

Scored Station

  • Scouts will be given instructions on how to properly use a hover bow and arrow.
  • Scouts will be allowed to shoot several flights at the hover targets and have their score recorded on a score sheet.

Station 10: Tomahawk

(This station is for under the age of 12 only)

A brief safety instruction n will be given at this station.

Scored Station

  • Each person will throw a tomahawk 15 to 20 times at a stationary target.
  • Each person will write their name and troop number on a score sheet.
  • Each person will be directed by the instructor to throw the tomahawk or axe at a target.
  • Any tomahawk or axe that sticks into the target will be scored as one point and will be recorded on the score sheet’
  • Turn in score sheet.

9:00am – 10:00                 Elmira Express High School Trap Team will give a demonstration of actual trap shooting at Sullivan Trail trap field for scouts that are not participating in the White Tails Challenge.

8:00am – 10:00am            Finial qualifying for White Tails Unlimited (free)

9:00am – 11:59am            Camp inspection, lanyard return, patch and Med form retrieval,  and check out
