2020 SCOUT SHOW

Scouting, a Game with a Purpose!

***WEATHER UPDATE***

The winter storm that has affected our area has forced us to make some minor changes to the Mall Show.  Here is the updated plan.

  • The overnight portion of the Mall Show is still on for any Unit that believes that they can safely make it to this portion of the event. If any Unit does not believe they can make it here safely, we suggest coming in the morning.
  • All overnight program will still be offered.
  • The main attraction for Friday night, (the Bouncy Houses and indoor Putt Putt) will also be offered Saturday morning from 9am to 11am for all that decided not to attend Friday night.
  • Those that signed up for arriving just for the day only, but would like to attend that portion will be able to upgrade their registration when they arrive to take advantage of that possibility.  The upgrade price is $6.00.

The health and welfare of our Scouts, Leaders, and parents is most important to us all.  Please make your decisions based on this.

If you have any questions on this matter, please call Daniel Carpenter at: 607-331-1193.

The 2020 Scout Show planning committee has taken great care in creating a special event for the Scouts of Five Rivers Council. Information in this guide will help your Scouts and your unit have a successful experience at this event. We are hoping your unit can provide an exciting booth as a way to share a Scout Skills with other scouts throughout the council or for recruiting people

LOCATION

The 2020 Scout Show will be located at the Arnot Mall: 3300 Chambers Road, Horseheads, NY

DATE

February 7 – 8, 2020

TIMES

Friday February 7th from 9:00 pm

Saturday February 8th from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm

All booths must be up and ready to go by 10:00 am on February 8.  No booth should be taken down until 2:30 pm.

 PURPOSE OF THE SCOUT SHOW

  • Show the community what the Scouting program provides for all Scouts.
  • Recruit new members for Units (Scouts BSA should be recruiting Arrow of Light Scouts).
  • Use the skills we have learned in Scouting and why these skills are exciting and important.
  • As a resource for leaders to interact with other units and gain ideas they can use in their unit.
  • Let the Cub Scouts see what Troops are doing in their area.
  • Have FUN!

WHO MAY PARTICIPATE

All registered members of the Boy Scouts of America are invited to attend. The Scout Show has programs and activities for all levels of scouting. Lions, Tigers, Cubs, Webelos, Scouts BSA, Venturing Scout, Explorers, and their families may participate. Adult Leaders and parents are encouraged to attend this event and ask scouts to invite their friends to show them the exciting things we do in Scouting.

This is a uniformed event.

 UNIT BOOTHS

Units should sign up to host an activity booth at the Mall Show. Booths should incorporate games, hands on activities, and lots and lots of pictures of Scouts having fun! Units should have available at their booths, information on when and where they meet, who the contact person is, and their upcoming calendar.  This is a great way to get more Scouts to join your Unit.

Steps to having a great booth

  1. READ – This Mall Show Leader’s Guide & suggested booth ideas and themes
  2. SHARE – Mall Show information with Scouts and other leaders in your unit.
  3. SELECT – A booth idea with an interactive activity, game or demonstration as part of the booth theme.
  4. INVITE – Encourage your Scouts to invite their friends not in Scouting to come to the event to see what Scouting is about.
  5. PLAN – Booth details, signs, materials you need, Scout participation schedule, leader participation schedule, try out the activity at a Scout meeting before the Mall Show.

STEPS TO SIGNING UP

  • Unit leadership decides on a display or activity for booth.  All booths must comply with the Guide to Safe Scouting rules, Climbing and Rappelling rules, and COPE rules where applicable.  If you have a question about any of these guidelines, please contact: Daniel Carpenter at 607-331-1193 or daniel.carpenter@scouting.org
  • Unit leadership decides on space needs for booth or demonstration as well as needs for electricity, etc. Note: Please keep in mind that we will be locating booths in the center areas of the mall aisles so try to make the booth or demonstration open and accessible from both sides.
  • Unit leadership completes and returns the attached application.  Be sure to list special needs.  Keep in mind that 12 feet is maximum height allowed in most of the mall.  If you do have anything that is tall please let us know as soon as possible to see if you can do the booth.

No Sleeping gear may be brought into the Mall before 9:00 pm. There will be a location for people to put their gear UNSECURED before 9:00 pm.

MOVIES

There is no set deal with the Mall Cinemas.   We suggest that if you go to the movies, you can come early.  Find an early show, enjoy the movie, then after movie, and enjoy the program set up for you after 9:00 pm.

Special Events throughout the Mall

There are some special opportunities for Scouts to have fun during the Scout Show.

SATURDAY BREAKFAST

There are many different options in the area for breakfast the next morning.  There is a Dunkin Donuts just across the street from the Arnot Mall.  There is a Mc Donald’s right next to the Dunkin Donuts. Or simply bring your own.  Please do not send Scouts across the road to get food.  Cinnabon will be open early as well as the Coffee House in the Arnot Mall.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Booth – each booth space will be approximately 12x12 and will be set up with one table and two chairs.  Items may be given away, but sales of any kind are not allowed.  If you need electricity for your booth, we need to know by January 28.  Do not request electricity Friday night or Saturday morning and expect it to be available.  Requests are through the Scout Shop.  All questions on booths are through the Scout Shop – please do not call the Mall management and expect them to answer questions.

EMERGENCIES

The Scout Shop will be the Headquarters for the event.  Any emergency, injury or problems should be directed there.  The Scout Shop phone number is (607) 796-0699 and should be provided to parents as an emergency number ONLY!  There will be a lot of people at the Mall Show and tracking someone down to tell them to run an errand is not warranted.  If parents call, please tell them they need to know the Unit number and Unit leader in charge.

UNIT CHECK IN

Unit check-in is located at Center Court – Find your District table and please sign in as soon as you arrive.  You will need a roster of who is attending at check-in time.  Please do not come early to sign in, people are still in the Mall and this makes for congestion in Center Court for people leaving the movies.
