Wilderness and Remote First Aid Course

Event Details

8 hour CPR for the Professional Rescuer / AED  and - 16 hour Wilderness Remote First Aid (WRFA)

The CPR for the Professional Rescuer / AED and WRFA course is designed for:

  • Adult scout leaders
  • Youth 14 and older (First Aid Merit Badge highly recommended)

This course teaches advanced skills to be used in emergencies when help from professional first responders may be far away.  All four of the BSA high-adventure bases require at least one person per trek (two per trek at Philmont Scout Ranch) to be current in WRFA.  Certification is good for two years.

To prepare participants to give critical care for potentially life-threatening emergencies in a delayed-help situation, the BSA/Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid course covers the following:

  • Primary and Secondary Assessments
  • Wounds and Infections
  • Head (Brain), Neck and Spinal Injuries
  • Hypothermia & Frostbite
  • Bone, Joint and Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Heat-Related Emergencies
  • Allergies and Anaphylaxis
  • Altitude-Related Illnesses
  • Burns
  • Evacuations, Gear Improvising and more….

Note – A current CPR for the Professional Rescuer / AED certification is a prerequisite for taking WRFA.  CPR for the Professional / AED will be offered during the Friday evening, April 4 and Saturday morning, April 5 sessions.  Anyone holding a current CPR for the Professional Rescuer / AED certificate may opt out of the CPR-AED session being offered on Friday evening and Saturday morning.  To opt out, email your CPR for the Professional Rescuer / AED certificate to the Course Director, Tim Woods, at wwwoodsw@earthlink.net prior to the start of the course.
