Okpik is the Inuit word for Snowy Owl.  Okpik is winter camping training for scouts (youth age 13+) and adult scouters. Learn about how to be comfortable and safe in the outdoors when camping in colder temperatures.  Camp out in the snow in a cabin, tent or snow shelter.  Go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.  Learn new ways to can incorporate winter fun into the program of your scout troop, venture crew or sea scout ship.

Okpik training consists of two parts:

Classroom session – Sunday, December 21st, 2025 from 9am – 3pm, at the Baden Powell Council Service Center (2150 NY-12, Binghamton, NY 13901)  Lunch is included.

Outdoor session – Friday-Sunday, January 9 – 11, 2026 at Pines Camp, Highland Forest, Fabius, NY.  Arrive: 5pm on Friday. Depart: Noon on Sunday.

(Optional, ice climbing activity for the afternoon on Sunday, January 11th, 1pm – 4pm at Tinker Falls, if conditions allow.)

Please inform us of any dietary restrictions.

It is highly recommended that you attend both the classroom and weekend Okpik training sessions.

Upon successful completion of the outdoor session, participants receive:

Note – You do not need to register for the classroom-only session separately! The $40 participant registration fee includes the classroom session.
