Jersey Jam Chess Tournament

Jersey Jam will feature a chess tournament Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The four preliminary tournaments will begin at 9 and 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m., and the championship tournament will follow.
There will be 32 chess players in each of the first four tournaments, for a total of 128 participants playing chess during the day. In each preliminary tournament, a participant will play five chess games, the number of games needed to rank the player.
Scouts will play "blitz" chess games that take a maximum of 10 minutes to play, and a chess clock will be used to time the games. Each player will be given five minutes on the chess clock. If a player’s time on the chess clock runs out, the other player wins. Of course, a player could win, lose or draw the chess game before the clock runs out.
The top three participants from each of the four preliminary chess tournaments will receive medals. The top four participants in the Jersey Jam championship tournament will receive trophies and their names will be announced during the Saturday evening show.
In addition, the top four chess players at Jersey Jam also will be invited to compete on the Boy Scouts of America team in the World Amateur Team and United States Team East Chess Tournament at the Parsippany Hilton, Parsippany, in February 2020.
