IOLS  

All participants must be at least 18 years old, registered in Scouting America and current with Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) in order to attend and receive credit for this training.

Working as patrols, this hands-on course provides adult leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. Upon completion, leaders should feel comfortable teaching Scouts the basic skills required to obtain the First Class rank and utilize in Scouting outdoor programs. Along with Youth Protection and Unit Leader Specific Training, this course is required of all direct contact leaders registered in Scouts BSA Troops and Venturing Crews in order to be considered “trained”.

In addition to learning the basic outdoor skills needed to effectively lead scouts through outdoor First Class requirements, IOLS provides tools and techniques to help leaders build their confidence in understanding the policies and guidelines of Scouting America’s outdoor programs, as well as learn best practices for unit program and organization from experienced volunteer staff and fellow participants. All programing is conducted in an open outdoor classroom environment where questions and discussions are encouraged.
