Historic Hike through Portsmouth and Kittery
with an overnight at Fort Foster, Kittery Point, ME
October 5-6, 2024
Here Ye! Hear Ye! Come one, come all to a fun and historic hike through the streets of Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME. The hike will begin on Saturday morning at the USS Albacore in Portsmouth and conclude at Fort McClary in Kittery. Along the way you’ll visit a host of historic sites including Strawbery Banke and many others. There will also be a scavenger hunt along the way to add even more fun.
Check-in: October 5th, at the USS Albacore. Times will be assigned and staggered from 9am to 11am
Cost: $25 per scout
$15 per leader
$5 per Non-participating (non-hiking leader)
*Cost includes admission to and special scout programming at the USS Albacore museum and the Strawbery Banke museum.
Registration:
*In order to plan staffing levels and supplies, WE NEED UNITS TO REGISTER as soon as possible!
*Registration will CLOSE on 9/27 11:59pm or whenever we reach registration capacity. NO WALK-INS will be allowed!
**PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER INDIVIDUALLY! Each unit (troop / crew / ship) should have ONE registration to cover all their attendees. This event is not for Packs.
Schedule:
Patrols will have staggered departures from the U.S.S Albacore museum beginning at 9:30am on Saturday. (note: first arrival will be 9, first check-in at 9:15, first departure from check-in to USS A at 9:30). Scouts will work with their patrols to complete a history themed scavenger hunt.
Stops will include: USS Albacore, Moffatt-Ladd House, North Church, Portsmouth Historical Society, John Paul Jones House, African Burial Ground Memorial, Strawbery Banke, Prescott Park, Memorial Bridge, John Paul Jones Historical Site, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Fort McClary, and Fort Foster.
Scouts and adults will be shuttled by bus from Fort McClary to Fort Foster
Nominal hike length (without additional exploring) is 5.12 miles.
Logistics:
- Units will be given a designated arrival window time for their hike. Please plan to arrive within that window so as not to clog up the start of the hike.
- Troops should plan to hike with 2 number of adults to allow as many youth as possible. Units with females will need at least one female leader per YPT guidelines. https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/yp-faqs/
- Troop gear can be dropped off in a vehicle at Fort Foster on Saturday morning.
- Units will need to coordinate getting all vehicles out of the USS Albacore parking lot before the end of the day Saturday.
- Additional registered unit adults needed for shuttling gear/cars may camp Saturday night at Fort Foster at $5 cost.
- There is a significant amount of logistics we are working through to plan this event. Please reach out to event leadership with any questions.
- Med forms for every participant Adult and Youth (Parts A&B) will be turned in at check in and can be picked up on the check out.
What do we need to bring?
- Scouts should pack lunch which can be eaten during the hike
- Scout Spirit
- Class A uniform
- Proper footwear for a 5+ mile hike. Hiking shoes/boots are recommended
- In addition to the Scout 10 Essentials (modified, as appropriate, for a hike through an urban area)...
Due to space constraints we are asking units to pack only essential camping and cooking gear.
No Ground fires will be allowed
NO TRAILERS WILL BE ALLOWED AT FORT FOSTER
