The Mid-America Council is pleased to announce that we have received a waiver from the Boy Scouts of America to be able to host a Day Camp Administration course within our council.  As a local course offering, we hope that every district will take advantage of this opportunity to train 2018 camp leadership as well as anyone being cultivated for future seasons.

This training is a two-day course for day camp directors, day camp program directors, and council day camp professional staff advisors/administrators. Comprehensive training on all aspects of the day camp operation, including methods of day camping, program scheduling and resources, staff organization, recruiting and training, and health and safety protection.

Prerequisites:  Participants must have completed Cub Scout Leader Training (any leader specific section), either in the classroom or online at the following link: www.scouting.org/training/adult. Youth protection training is also required. The link is: www.scouting.org/training/youthprotection. A copy of the certificate(s) of training is required.

When*:  Friday, February 9, 9 AM - Saturday, February 10, 9 PM
*participants wishing to arrive early on Thursday evening will be able to at no additional charge

Where:  Camp Cedars

Cost:  (paid by your day camp's budget)

  • Adults - $175
    • SPECIAL PACKAGE:  $400 for the Camp Director, Program Director, and Staff Advisor (ie District Executive)
  • Includes:  all course materials, Friday lunch - Saturday dinner

Notes:

  • All National Camp School participants must be approved by their Scout Executive and provide proof of current BSA registration (membership card) and internet-based Youth Protection Training (completion certificate) upon arrival.
  • Retraining: Participants are eligible to take a retraining course within six (6) months following the date of expiration.
  • Participants will receive the appropriate training certificate upon successful completion of all required course elements.
  • Weather:  The course will be held mostly indoors, but a light sweater or jacket is suggested.  However, please be prepared for the outdoors, just in case!

What to Take to Camp:

  • Samples of your council’s day camp/resident camp promotional materials, staff manuals, or other camp literature, registration forms, schedules, etc., for display or giveaway. Make copies for at least 20 participants.
  • Interesting crafts or activity ideas to share on Friday night (“30 Ideas in 30 Minutes”)
  • Your camp T-shirt—there will be an opportunity for everyone to wear theirs
  • Notepad and pencil or pen
  • Your completed health history and resource questionnaire
  • Proof of BSA registration and training (Cub Leader Position Specific and Youth Protection)
  • Cash, checks or credit card to buy really cool NCS stuff at our trading post, you can also preview and purchase camp school items to be sent directly to your home at http://www.scoutstuff.org/bsa/specialcollections/camp-school.html.

Personal Gear:

  • Official complete BSA uniform. With limited exceptions, the uniform is worn during the entire course.
  • Toiletries, soap, shampoo, etc. (note that aspirin, antacid, etc, are not available at camp)
  • Meals are provided; however, we will have long days. If you are a snacker, you might want to bring snacks. You will be at a table of approximately seven people.
  • Camera (Shoot the displays and show others back home what can be done!)

What to Expect and What Is Expected:

  • Arrive rested. Be prepared for concentration, participation, and fun! Days last early morning to late at night.
  • Be prepared for multiple-occupancy in your room.
  • You must arrive no later than 9:00 a.m. on the first day, and attend all sessions through the last day in order to be certified
  • In order to focus on the learning, please leave the distractions of life behind: family, children, pets, job, etc. Note also, there are no accommodations for anyone but you.
  • Cub Scout On-Line Training www.scouting.org/volunteer/training is now a required prerequisite for this course. Training required includes: Cub Scout Leader Position-Specific Training (any leader specific section) and Youth Protection.
  • Please understand that if you receive the names and contact information for other participants or for staff, you may not contact them for commercial purposes unless you receive their expressed permission to do so.
