STEM Adventure at Michigan Science Center (Detroit)

Event Details

The Great Lakes Field Service Council STEM Adventure for the Fall will be held at Michigan Science Center and will bring together NOVA Counselors and Michigan Science Center instructors in an effort for Cub Scouts and Webelos to get hands on experience with achieving the "Out of this World!” NOVA module (limited to the first 60 Wolfs, Bears or Webelos) in the morning. The Boy Scouts/Venturing will gain practical experience working on “Shoot!” and "Launch!" NOVA module (limited to 60 Scouts) in the afternoon.

You will be engaging in different STEM learning experiences. Multiple areas around Michigan Science Center will provide opportunities to explore. There is so much to do that fitting it all in in one day is next to impossible. That is why your STEM Task Force will design a specific “Scavenger Hunt” map for you to use so you can maximize activities that will help you with your STEM NOVA Awards.

You can find worksheets and more information about NOVA activity at www.michiganscouting.org/STEM.

We will also be creating "fleur de lis" and "NOVA" LED "Blinkie" Neckerchief slides as a station during the event!

UPDATE: 11-17-17
You can add the BSA fleur de lis and/or NOVA LED "Blinkie" Neckerchief slide project to your registration.  This is a special activity we will be offering throughout the day.  It is not required for the NOVA Award, but fun to "learn to solder" from our "Solder League" volunteers!
We are also adding the option to attend the new 4D theater while you are at the Michigan Science Center.  They will be showing the movie "Extreme Weather" and they will have showing at 11 am and 2 pm that day.

  • Our suggestion is that Boy Scouts/Venturers attend the 11 am before they start work on their NOVA Shoot! as the movie will help to achieve Requirement #1 of their NOVA.
  • Cub Scouts/Webeos-  should attend the movie AFTER they complete their NOVA at 2 pm.

Prerequisites for Cub Scouts/Webelos
Make sure you complete Requirement #1 (Unless you are going to attend the movie.  You can take notes during the movie and use the information to apply for this requirement) and #2 (If you have the applicable "belt adventure" completed before the event - if not, we will be completing Option A at the event.)

Also bring a preliminary concept design  for Requirement #3C and #3D.

Prerequisites for Boy Scouts/Venturers
Make sure you complete Requirement #1 (You may use the movie ($3 additional charge) for 30 minutes of your research requirement.) #2, #3A1 and #3A2.
