ESMD Yacht Cruise 2019

Event Details

Eagle Scouts of Metro Detroit Yacht Cruise

June 12th, 2019
9:15 AM
Grosse Pointe Yacht Club
788 Lake Shore Road, Grosse Pointe Shores

Cost: $40-50 depending on meal choice (includes travel, lunch, tip, fees, & tax), payable directly to the Old Club On-Site.

The ESMD will be hosting a Yacht Cruise from the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, located on Lake St. Clair, to the Old Club on Harsens Island. This year's cruise will take us from the GPYC up the Detroit River through the main freighter channel, past Whalpole Island and the First Nation Reserve. We will then pass the north end of Harsens Island before turning around near Algonac to head back down to the Old Club. Eagles will enjoy lunch on the island and have time to explore the grounds before the return trip to the GPYC. We expect to return around 3:00 PM.

Lunch will consist of a plated meal of Lake Perch, Michigan Chicken, or Grilled Tenderloin (your choice), salad, starch, vegetable, coffee and tea. Additional beverages available for purchase. Payment must be made via credit card the day of the event at the Old Club.

During lunch, we will hear from Gary Marowske, who served for 9 years as the Chairman of the Michigan Waterways Commission. He will be providing an update on Michigan's recreational harbors.

Assuming a full event, we will be traveling aboard two Eagle Scout-owned boats, Larry Stephenson's 41 foot Viking power boat, "Mack the Knife," and Gary Marowski's 56 foot Viking power boat, "Flamebouyant." Both boats have toilet facilities. Please plan to arrive at the GPYC between 9:15 AM and 10:00 AM, but absolutely no later than 10:00 AM, which will allow plenty of time for parking and walking to your assigned boat.

This event is limited to 30 Eagle Scouts only. We will plan to go rain or shine, but extreme weather conditions could cause departure delays on either end. Acceptable shoes to be worn aboard boats are those with soft soles, such as deck shoes and running shoes. The Old Club has a dress code for members and guests that is strictly enforced. Participants must wear collared shirts and dress shorts or casual slacks; no jeans or t-shirts are allowed in the Clubhouse. If you find you are running late for the morning departure, please call Larry Stephenson at 313-910-9579. The option of driving is also available for those with time constraints. Harsens Island can be reached by driving to Algonac and taking the car ferry to the island.
