BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) (Camp Agawam)
At this time, this course is full, but we are still looking for staff to help with it.
Who: Cub Scout leaders in charge of the pack's outdoor experiences
At least one BALOO trained leader is required for all Cub Scout Camping Events
What: BALOO training covers topics from health and safety, to the logistics of planning and running a successful camping trip for your pack. You'll learn about meal preparation, camping, cooking (including hands-on Dutch oven cooking), camping gear selection, water safety, and campfire program planning. You'll also learn group games, skits and songs, and practice traditional Scouting skills like pocketknife use and safety, map and compass, knot tying, hiking, outdoor ethics, and first aid.
As of May 2017, BALOO training is now comprised of two components - an online component, and a practical, hands-on component. Both components must be completed to qualify as a "Trained" Cub Scout outdoor leader, and to receive the BALOO recognition patch. The practical component is now an overnighter, so be prepared to spend the night.
The online component contains introductory and basic information, and must be completed prior to the practical component. The online portion of BALOO is available on the BSA Learning Center by logging into My.Scouting.org. Go to the Course Catalog to add it to your Learning Plan.
This is a free training event but registration is required.
