Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS)

Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program. This training provides leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to run a program well and help their Scouts succeed. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in the Boy Scout Handbook. Please be prepared for any type of weather as you will be outdoors much of the time.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity Scout Coaches, as well as being recommended for Webelos Leaders.

This hands-on program gives leaders an introduction to the patrol method of a boy-led troop.  The teaching methods, activities, and games model the variety of teaching used in effective and engaging Scouting programs.  Skill sessions include campsite selection, outdoor ethics, fire building, cooking, knots and lashings, use of woods tools, plant & animal identification, map & compass skills, packing, hiking, and development of campfire programs.

Participants should leave the training experience with a full understanding of how the patrol method operates, a feeling of comfort in working with and instructing their Scouts, and an increased level of confidence in taking Scouts outdoors safely.

Cost: $40, includes a crackerbarrel later Friday night (please eat dinner before arriving), and all three meals on Saturday.

Bring: Paper, pen, water bottle or mug for course time.  Suggested personal gear for the overnighter will be emailed to you.
