Archaeology Merit Badge College at Freeport Historical Society

Event Details

Freeport Historical Society is offering Boys Scouts a *Merit Badge College* that will fulfill the requirements for the Archaeology badge with some independent work at home.  There is no charge for this activity but space is limited.

Our program  includes 9.5 hours of education with Archaeology Teacher Sue Clukey, Archivist & Historian Holly Hurd, Historian John Mann, and Professional Archaeologist Leith Smith. The scheduled dates are Oct 2 7-8:30 PM, Oct 15 12-5 PM, Oct 16 7-8:30, and Oct 30 7-8:30 PM. These four meetings will take place at the Harrington House, 45 Main Street in Freeport, and will involve hands-on digging and processing of artifacts.

 

INDEPENDENT WORK AT HOME

For Oct 2 meeting:

Read the Merit Badge Series “Archaeology”

For Oct 15 meeting: (Sunday 12-5)

Come prepared to dig and get dirty!

For Oct 16 meeting:

Do Requirement #5. As a group, prepare a 30 min presentation about what you learned on Sept 25 and share it with the rest of your troup.

Requirement 10b. Presentation by John Mann, Scots-Irish Historian, about early Freeport settlers

For Oct 30 meeting:

Requirement 7b. (modified)

Make a list of the trash your family throws out over one week and bring it in for discussion.

In a bag or box, collect and bring in some of the “trash” you think might last for 100 years. Consider and be ready to discuss what these “artifacts” reveal about your family.
