GOLD!!!!!! GOLD DISCOVERED IN NORTH BELGRADE! SCOUTS FROM ALL OVER KENNEBEC VALLEY and BEYOND RUSH TO STAKE A CLAIM!!!

This year units are picking a country they would like to represent and be the expedition team from said country to win the claim for their country. It should be reflected on their sled and with their meal.

At Camp Bomazeen, Kennebec Valley District is hosting District’s Annual Klondike Derby to be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 656 Horsepoint Rd., North Belgrade.  The following pages will give you the basic information you and your patrol members will need to help get you started.  Your scoutmaster will keep you up-to-date on further developments. Pack and Troop specific information will be inside the guide.

Just what is a Klondike Derby?  Well, it’s like this.  The Klondike Derby is a fun-filled activity patterned after the days of the Yukon Gold Rush.  Patrols build sledges like the early prospectors used as they hunted for gold.  The members of your patrol serve as a team of huskies to pull your patrol’s sledge around the course.  Your patrol will visit a number of stations, each having an Alaskan/Yukon town name. At each town your patrol will be confronted with a problem requiring Scout skills to solve.  Depending on how well your patrol works out the problem, you will receive a number of Gold Nuggets.

HERE IS HOW IT WORKS PRIOR TO ARRIVAL:

  1. Register online by January 18, 2023.
  2. Patrols send in a one copy of the enclosed roster sheet with the name of the patrol and patrol members to Julie McKenney on January 18, 2023 to help with planning.
  3. If you don’t already have one, build a sledge for your patrol using the enclosed drawing as a guide. If you need to join with another team, let us KNOW or reach out to other units!
  4. Brush up on your scout skills.

ONCE YOU HAVE ARRIVED:

  1. You should arrive between 7:30-8:15am prior to the start of the first Klondike rotation at 9am.
  2. You will check-in at MCCurdy Headquarters for registration. The whole teams needs to be accounted for BEFORE the Patrol Leader & Scoutmaster goes inside for registration.
  3. Once you have your paperwork, you will report to the SAFETY INSPECTION TEAM. Your patrol and sledge will be inspected to ensure you are ready for the competition.  This includes a safety inspection of all members of the patrol. If a member is not winter-prepared for the course, they will not be allowed to participate.
  4. All patrols will be given sealed orders and will start out at the same time.  Your orders will provide you with your instructions.  When you have completed the course, your patrol will return to headquarters, and have your trail scores tallied.  Scoring will be based on the number of Gold Nuggets (points) earned on the trail.

Don’t forget—if your patrol is to take part, fill in the enclosed roster and mail or email it right away!  The deadline for pre-registration is January 14th.  All paid pre-registered patrols will earn bonus nuggets. Any units registering after contact Julie immediately!

If you don't have enough to build a team, you will can be merged with another unit in the same situation. So the sooner we know this information the sooner you can coordinate.
