COPE & Climbing Training 

COPE & Climbing Foundation Training: April 23-25 Camp C.S. Klaus in Greeley, Iowa
COPE Instructor Training: April 30-May 2 Howard H Cherry Scout Reservation in Central City, Iowa
Natural Rock Climbing Instructor Training: June 4-6 Backbone State Park in Dundee, Iowa

COPE & Climbing Foundation Training:
This training will teach the foundation skills needed for a Climbing Instructor, and will certify you to facilitate climbing towers and High COPE courses. This certification is valid at any of our 4 councils (Hawkeye Area, Winnebago, Mid-Iowa, and Northeast Iowa), and lasts for 3 years! You will receive a Level II or Level I (or Instructor-in-Training) certification, depending on your age. Times may be changed.

COPE & Climbing Foundation Training includes:

  • Fundamentals of COPE & Climbing
  • Initiative Games
  • Safety Measures
  • Life Safety Systems
  • Emergency Procedures
  • Artificial Climbing Structures (Climbing Tower, Climbing Wall, and High COPE) Operation
  • Climbing Merit Badge Clinic on Saturday 9AM - 6PM

COPE Instructor Training Includes:

  • Prerequisite: COPE and Climbing foundation Training
  • More Initiative Games
  • More High COPE
  • Low COPE
  • Team-Building

Natural Rock Climbing Instructor Training:
This training will cover anchoring & other rigging techniques needed to facilitate Natural Rock climbs. This training builds off of the Foundation/Tower course, participants should attend the first training weekend or have a current Climbing Instructor certification. Questions can be directed to the event contacts or to your council's COPE/Climbing committee. BSA Medical Form Parts A & B are required for registration.

Natural Rock Climbing Instructor Training includes:

  • Prerequisite: COPE & Climbing Foundation Training
  • Climbing techniques
  • Climbing classification
  • Anchor systems
  • Site selection and management
  • Natural rock climbing programs

Youth and adult participants are welcome, level of certification available varies:

  • Level II Instructors must be at least age 21
  • Level I Instructors must be at least age 18
  • Instructors in Training must be at least age 16
  • Scouts age 14-15 are welcome to attend and participate in running programs, but cannot earn certification

Attention Unit Leaders: If your unit has two leaders (or a leader and a 16-17 year old) attend the two-weekend training, the Iowa Challenge Training Consortium will host your unit on a COPE outing at one of our camps or a climbing outing at Backbone State Park or Pictured Rocks County Park.
