Voyageur Fall 2023 (Youth Training)

Event Details

VOYAGEUR
Canoe Training for Youth

The Voyageur Canoe Youth Training Program is designed specifically for our scouting youth. The focus will be on training youth in proper canoeing techniques, trip planning, navigation principles, and the skills necessary for leading and executing a high adventure or weekend canoe trip with their units. The program is closely aligned with the highly successful adult program that has been in operation in the Crossroads Council since the early 1960s. Participation will be open to all registered youth 14 years or older (we will consider scouts as young as 13 if recommended by their unit leader).

Requirements:

  • Be a registered Scout (please bring your registration number with you).
  • Be 14 years old (or 13 years old with unit leader recommendation).
  • Show evidence that you have passed the BSA Swim Test and qualified as a "Swimmer."
  • Provide a current BSA physical, parts A and B.
  • Parent/guardian permission form.
  • Waiver of liability for Indianapolis Sailing Club.

             * Required forms will be provided on the registration site.

What is covered in this course?

* Canoe safety and skills instruction, consisting of -

  • Proper life jacket fitment and usage policies.
  • Basic and intermediate strokes.
  • Canoe and paddle nomenclature.
  • Understanding water flow and “reading” the water.
  • Principles of open water navigation.
  • Map and compass basics.
  • Canoe portage and carrying techniques.
  • Activity-specific First Aid recommendations.
  • Canoe trailer loading and unloading techniques.
  • Knots, lashings, and when to use them.
  • Trip planning and logistics.
  • Equipment selection and packing.
  • Introduction to canoe-appropriate stretching and light exercise.
  • On-water rescues and canoe recovery.
  • On-water communication techniques.

* Upon course completion, participants will have earned the Canoeing Merit Badge.

Additional information and prerequisites

Participants should be aware that every attempt will be made to not assign friends and unit mates to the same canoe.  Because tandem canoeing can be challenging to learn without the additional stresses of relationship dynamics, we wish all our participants to leave the course with the same friends and family members that they began the course with.

Scholarships are available for those who have financial need. If you are interested in the scholarship program please contact Dan Cunningham at 317-697-7994.
